  • Secrets of Babe Ruth's hitting

Even those overseas should be aware of Babe Ruth, perhaps the greatest hitter in baseball history.

Turns out back in 1921 researchers at Columbia University took him into the lab to see what made the Babe so superior. Popular Science online has reprinted their article and the results, and it's pretty amazing.

Yes - he was strong as a bull but that wasn't the 'secret'.

    He was a neurological Superman;

The secret of Babe Ruth's ability to hit is clearly revealed in these tests, His eye, his ear, his brain, his nerves all function more rapidly than do those of the average person. Further the coordination between eye, ear, brain, and muscle is much nearer perfection than that of the normal healthy man.

The scientific "ivory hunters" dissecting the "home-run king" discovered brain instead of bone, and showed how little mere luck, or even mere hitting strength, has to do with Ruth's phenomenal record.

What? I should be aware of somebody who was famous almost a century ago in a sport that's only popular in one single country... you really do take yourself too seriously.

Obviously he hasn't heard that baseball is an international sport; Asia, North America, South America....even Russia has leagues. Tons of players in the US are Japanese, Central/South American etc.

Guess AZ didn't get the IM

Baseball is overrated. Especially as a sport. Don't get me wrong, I am watching the World Series and it IS exciting to watch, but as compared to Hockey & Soccer etc it sucks to play.

I think it was this past year, someone recorded the amount of time that the game was actually in play and it was something under 10 minutes, as opposed to 60+ for hockey or 90+ for soccer.

That study was stupid. All they timed was the duration of a pitch/hit sequence. Lost on them were the times involved in strategy; player movements & positioning, hitting vs. specific pitchers, rostering, pitching/hitting/running signs, holding a man on base etc. etc. Call it not seeing the forest for the trees.

As for sucking to play: I've probably played at least 1000 games between little league, JV, Varsity, Connie Mack and adult leagues and it was anything but boring. Even less boring was coaching, which is like hearding cats

Perhaps those who think it sucks are just sucky, unskilled players.

Hey Az.. I know of at least one person from your country who plays.. where's Rakido been lately?

The Babe was certainly a legend surpassing ordinary legends in his sport, and even people who know almost nothing about baseball know who Babe Ruth was.

                yep, playing it for myself.

If i remember correctly, there are approx. 50000 people playing Baseball and the other variations like softball, t-ball, ... in Germany.

                  isn't that a chocklade flavor?

I've heard of Babe Ruth but I wasn't aware of Baseball, I thought he was the greatest tick-taks player.

Yes, I was in a bad mood, but I stand by what I said - even though I wouldn't go to the trouble of typing it had I to choose a second time.

I never said nobody plays or knows Baseball outside of the US, so you can try and refute this argument I didn't make all day long if it makes you happy.

Sounds like Chess. As much as I enjoy chess, it did nothing to keep me in shape while I was young, or even now. I think that is a key part of sports.

I know your use of "suck" was to mock my own (on a public forum I use simple English) but that was one of the lowest things I have ever heard you say on this forum. I stand by my comment - as COMPARED to Hockey & Soccer etc it sucks to play. Baseball is simply too slow for me. They need a timer (like in chess :P) so they don't take too long between pitches.
I honestly don't know what to say to "unskilled," posting on a video card/internet forum I kind of lose my credibility as an athlete. You will just have to take my word that skill level is/was not an issue in making my comment.
