    Liar, liar....

For decades, Court TV has been the ultimate true crime destination, bringing viewers inside the courtroom for the most compelling cases across the country.

Man ordered to wear 'I AM A LIAR' sign for lying to police

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. (AP) — Craig Breuwet endured a painfully public punishment for lying to police -- he marched up and down a busy road wearing a placard proclaiming "I AM A LIAR."

Breuwet, 33, submitted to the court-sanctioned penalty Wednesday instead of facing trial for filing a false police report. Breuwet said he has never been more embarrassed or humiliated.

"I've learned my lesson," he said.

Breuwet told police last August that he had been kidnapped by two men in a parking lot, driven to nearby Macon and beaten up. Two days later, he admitted making up the abduction part of his story, police said.

Authorities said they do not know what really happened, and Breuwet would not discuss it with a news reporter.

Breuwet was required to publicly display the placard for 10 hours under a pretrial diversion arrangement, District Attorney Kelly Burke said.

Burke said he may also expunge any record of those charges.

Personally I think such public "shaming" would do more good than incarceration or fines for many offences.

Rack 'em up, hang the sign around their neck then put 'em in the middle of the local mall for the weekend. Tomato's 3 for $10, proceeds to charity

See, with just your first sentencxe I'd have agreed. What they sentenced this guy to was fine, IMO. But if we did as your second sentence implies, we'd throw ourselves back into the middle ages.

In my city we have a guy that should be sentenced to have a sign that says " I'm a scammer"

but at least society would 1) be aware of crime, and 2) wouldn't tolerate it.

biggest issue here seems to be the fact that punishments are not personal enough. people take the fine, take whatever, and go.

What human rights are being violated? He screwed up, and rather than see jail/fines, he voluntarily did this. It serves as an example to others to not pull the same stunt

Years ago, this was commonplace, crimes commited were punished for all to see as a remender of society's laws....but the politically correct have pushed all this behind closed doors and public executions are a thing of the past... where is the deterrent value of all this?

                  His rights.

Thats why Junkies can sue the Home Office and get a large out of court settlement for doing cold turkey. Human Rights for the Criminal is the in thing here.
