    Hello,

I'm currently an assitant at our university, and normally my contract would have been convertered to a doctor-assistant (another 6-year mandate). However, due to budget issues, an assistant mandate is no longer automatically upgraded to a doctor-assistant. This means that my contract at the university is unsure after I get my PHD.

As I mentioned before, I'm thinking of moving to Canada. Just browsed some career websites, and apparently, Waterloo University (Toronto) is looking for a number of people.

Just wondering how I should go about this?
I'm seriously thinking of sending them my resumé, publication list and teaching experience. But is this the proper way to start this procedure?
(I don't intend to move to Canada without a job)

    Hi

If they are advertising for staff then their website will detail the procedure. Generally you find the phrase 'CVs will only be accepted in support of a completed application form' - this is to ensure that the same info is supplied by all applicants and greatly aids the sifting process.

Informal contacts are also generally encouraged - its generally a good idea to get a feel for the people you would be working with, also to find out what level of experience they are looking for. They may be a Uni that likes to develop 'new blood' or they may (as we are) be in a phase where they actively recruit seasoned academics with strong publication records as this is extremely important for attracting Government funding.

University of Waterloo is one of the highest regarded schools in Canada for Math/computer science. Would be an excellent place to go.. it is not "in" toronto though, more like a few hours drive from downtown

www.lakeheadu.ca, being a tad out of the way in Thunder Bay had an awful lot of foreign teachers, it may be a good one to get your foot in the door .. cost of living is fairly inexpensive up there with cheap houses etc..

Waterloo University is actually in Waterloo, about 15 mins from me.
I'm not sure of the procedure, but if you need me to make some inquiries for you, let me know.

I'm now working on my resume (found more interesting offers at the University of Toronto, applications due by mid February).

I'm wondering about the names for the different levels of school, are these correct:
              younger than 12: elementary school
              12-18: highschool
              18+ : university

              Thanks!

Oh, and if you don't want to travel quite that far, look at jobs.ac.uk.

                    Depends on the area.

I had Elementary (Kindergarten + grades 1-6), Junior High (grades 7-9), and High School (grades 10-12).
I think more school divisions in the city use K-5, 6-8, 9-12 now though.
And then there are some K-8 and K-9 schools.

Oh yeah, and stay the hell away from Winnipeg, we probably have lots of opportunities (U of Winnipeg, U of Manitoba, + other schools) but the winters are absolutely horrible. Summers can be nice though. The only real good thing is the incredibly low cost of living.

Not just canoing, you had to know how to plan an overnight camping trip too. It is the outdoor recreational course, which is a joke. The Engineering school is not too bad, and the only place around which has an upgrade program from a 3 year college diploma to a university degree

Trust me, the engineers were too busy to party, most of the time.
