According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, hoax means to trick into believing or accepting as genuine something false and often preposterous. However, the governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick, seems to think it means a harmless publicity stunt that makes your police and government officials look like complete and total fools. His quote on the Mooninite signs that were reported to be improvised explosive devices? "It's a hoax — and it's not funny," So... does he think the advertisers were trying to trick people into believing actual real-life Mooninites were really going to invade Boston?
Another wonderful quote: "No matter who did this, I think there's probably enough evidence I think the Boston Police Department, the bureau, state police — everybody will probably get together … I wouldn't be surprised to see someone charged in this. This is an extremely serious situation," former FBI Director Bill Gavin. "Whoever did this — whether it be kids or adults — if they think it's funny, I think they'll soon learn it's not that much of a humorous situation."
Yes, it's not easy to find humor in the face of such a blatant example of government incompetence.
