NEW YORK, Feb 27 (Reuters) - CompUSA, the computer and gadget retailer owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, said on Tuesday it would close more than half of its U.S. retail locations over the next two to three months to focus on top performing locations.

CompUSA said in a statement it would close 126 of its stores and would receive a $440 million cash capital infusion, but it was not specific as to the source of the cash. The company also said it would cut costs and restructure.

The company operates 225 stores, which its Web site says are located in the United States and Puerto Rico.

"Based on changing conditions in the consumer retail electronics markets, the company identified the need to close and sell stores with low performance or nonstrategic, old store layouts and locations faced with market saturation," Roman Ross, chief executive officer of CompUSA, said in the statement.

"The process began last week with the closing of four CompUSA stores and over the next 60-90 days, the company will close a total of 126 stores in the United States to focus on initiative that enhance its top performing locations ."

On Monday, CompUSA said it would close two stores in California, one in Texas and one in Illinois. CompUSA said it was trying to streamline operations and bolster margins at top-performing stores.

Last September, an official from Slim's conglomerate Grupo Carso (GCARSOA1.MX: Quote, Profile, Research) told Reuters that Slim, the third-richest man in the world, was considering selling the loss-making business.

Intense gross margin pressure, especially in the flat panel television category, has plagued others in this sector, contributing to Circuit City Stores Inc.'s (CC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) announcement earlier this month that it was closing 70 stores.

CompUSA competes with Best Buy (BBY.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Circuit City.

Not surprising; most of their prices can be beat online, plus their selection has been not so hot the last couple of years. Outfits like NewEgg are tough competition, especially whwn they offer bundles.

Guess that's the problem, most "physical" stores can be beat online. It's also happening here (closing stores) and the trend will continue. Retail sales are hit hard, they're left with corporate sales to take the heat off and compensating from other fields in the case of holdings, but that can't go on forever.

CompUSA is screwed. They've been a ripoff for years, and as mentioned other stores like bestbuy and circuit city are cheaper and just down the road.

            Not in these parts.

Best Buy, absent a sale, is more expensive, has fewer computer components and often things are not in stock. Circuit City has even worse stocking issues. The last 3 things I went there for were all out of stock, but they had all the faxmodems you'd ever want

OTOH I can go to NewEgg etc. & I get most anything I want for a computer and in the case of MB/CPU more often than not there will be a discounted combo no retailer here could touch in terms of price.

NewEgg.com and ZipZoomFly.com are the two best. Always check between the two before buying.

And their prices are almost always better. I just bought a MS Natural Ergo 4000 keyboard. It was $60 at Best Buy. NewEgg had it for $50 regular with $7 shipping and handling, no taxes, and a $20 mail-in rebate that could not be used at retailers like Best Buy, etc. Once I get the MIR back I will have spent $37 on the keyboard, where I would have paid ~$65 at Best Buy.
