  • looking for an European paypal user

    Hi guys,

ok, now here comes a really stupid search request. I'm currently trying to buy a laptop from the US, from someone with whom I had done business before, who has a long history of successful sales in another forum and whom I therefor trust enough to send the money up front.

The only (useful) method of payment seems to be paypal. I therefore opened an account, verified it with my credit card (was reluctant to do that, but nevertheless) and thought everything was fine.

    Which was apparently wishful thinking.

I cannot pay the money (1360$), because, as the customer support puts it, they use some statistical analysis to prevent fraudulent use - and limits me (at the moment) to payments of up to 50$ or so. And I cannot "fill up" the account by a bank transfer, because that's apparently only possible in some countries (Germany, for example).

As I see it, my only option at the moment would be to send someone I trust (from Germany, Norway, or else) the money by bank transfer, get the money transferred back to my paypal account and then pay the laptop.

    Any volunteers?

    Thanks a lot,
    wulfman

I'd be more than happy to help, but I think PayPal charges me for transfers. You might be better off using someone with a standard PayPal account. Any problems, give me an email.

just sent you an email - money transfer into from your bank account to paypal and sending money to a paypal account should be free.

      thanks!

Wulfman, PayPalling this amount of money is going to cost you more than doing an international wire transfer (Ãœberweisung). Just get the guy's bank account details, request an international wire transfer form from your bank and fill it out. The transfer will take a few days, but will end up cheaper, even with you paying all expenses.

                    Az are you certain?

In EU theres actually a max amount of cash that banks my cahrge for customer to customer transfers.

Im not certain the same goes for non-EU customers.

(Oh.: And its not all banks in EU that "knows" about this rule either!).

But its certainly worth checking out.

                    Other option: Use google checkout.

well, the money already started moving around.

fees are not my problem - as far as I can tell, no fees will be charged to my account for any of the planned activities (bank-bank, bank-paypal, paypal-paypal), and the seller offered the thinkpad with all fees included. of course higher than the local price, but still fair enough.

I did a wire transfer to Tanzania at one point and paid well over fifty dollars for that - even the worst-case 3.4% paypal scenario is better than that. and at least with that I can be sure that the money arrives quickly. said transaction in africa took nearly two weeks, but I suspect that might have been a problem with the local bank.

PS.: I'm getting a T60 with core duo 1.86, 14" sxga+, 80gb, 512MB. I'll will have to upgrade the ram, adding some 60€ more to the price and pay in total a bit more than 1000€ for the notebook, compared to this
, and will just have a slighty slower, but cooler cpu (CD vs. C2D) and only ABG and not ABGN networking, but saving about 600€.
