Sadly can't provide a link to the story as strangley there isn't one.
This morning BBC breakfast was talking about a huge Credit card fraud at Petrol stations across the UK. From what I can gather the pin number has been recorded from cctv and then small amounts of money have been taken from the comprised accounts. The money has then been transferred to terrorist organisations like the Tamil Tigers.
Doing a google on this shows that this problem has occured plenty of times in the past.
Chip and Pin is supposed to be safer. Of course the big weakness is when you type in your pin number. Many shops have reader fastened down so you can't Lift it towards yourself. Where possible I try hold the card reader as close to my body as possible or tilt it away from the assitant or the person stood behind you. Of course this won't be any good for cctv if it's placed right.
Of course what many don't consider is that once your card details have been taken it can be used for anything. Reading about operation Ore was an eye opener and something really scary. For those that don't know about Operation Ore it was a web site that was setup to catch child perverts. The problem was cards used to access the site in many case had stolen. The Police descended on the innocent victimns and wham bam you're guilty and your life is ruined. One of the biggest names was Pete Townshend whos name was linked to one website Alberto which wasn't even related to child porn. It seems that the Who Guitarist confessed to a crime he never commited. The flawed Police investigation sort of leaves you rather nervous of buying anything online. Since I've had my identity stolen twice in six weeks it sort of makes you think was happening out there.
So perhaps you're best buying with cash where possible.
