Some 40-odd nations throughout Europe, with a couple or so Asian counties (Israel, Turkey, Cyprus) meet each year to decide who has the "best" pop song. The semi-finals last week eliminated most of the good songs, leaving 24 songs for the finals last week. The public of each country vote as to the best, but never on the quality of the song, but on factors such as common background. For example, the Nordic countries vote for each other, the Baltic states vote for each other, the ex-Yugoslav countries vote for each other, Cyprus always gives the max 12 points to Greece and nothing to Turkey etc. Another important factor is that immigrant populations always vote for their motherland, which is why every Turk in Germany voted 10 times for Turkey, while the Germans themselves were too sensible to vote for anyone. In the semifinals, the ex-Warsaw pact countries made a massive pact of solidarity, continued into the finals. Result: the first 16 out of 24 places went to Eastern countries. The 17th place went to Finland.

The winner was Serbia with an archetypical lesbian butch female singer and the second was Ukraine with a drag queen act. The last two were Ireland and the UK, the latter was 2nd last and not last because a misguided Maltese public gave it the full 12 points. Guess the UK must have saturated Malta with pot smoke.

I have always said that the voting should be done by a jury of real musicians in each country who sit in a room with just loudspeakers (no TV, to remove the flash showmanship) and no knowledge of the country of origin. That way, the song would be judged on its apolitical music and lyrics.

There is a commentary between the songs by two persons of the host country, but no one ever hears this, because each broadcaster throughout Europe adds his own commentary, usually pointing out the negative points of every song except their own. During voting, the commentators slam into countries not voting for them and making very disobliging remarks generally.

It may be an attempt at entertainment but it is in fact a farce. Competition for facre o/t year is always fierce but the eurovisionsongfestival ussually comes out at the top. I think the beginning of GW3 was one such seldom seen times where it ended #2.
