  • What's up with Esso?????

This is pissing me off more than anything, check this...

We know there are three grades of gas, regular, extra and premium based on octane level.

    Regular cost $1.03

    Premium cost $1.09
So the extra would normally fall in between the two, now the idiots priced Extra at the same as the premium, at $1.09 WTF?

Why is the extra which is 87 octane, priced the same as Premium which is at 91 octane?
And why the heck did they price them at the highest price point?

    This is insane!!!

Is the Extra ethanol-blend? They might be trying to milk a few extra pennies off the E-10 fuel.

In these parts, E-10 is the same price as the regular. At least, it is at the discount stations.

well to me nothing changed, and nothing is labeled "Extra ethanol-blend" as far as I see.
I think it's a scam, I won't put ethanol enriched gas in my car because I don't know what the effects are in older engines.

Anyway, I will try Sonoco or Shell to see if they are doing the same, if not? I will stop buying from Esso!

      Thanks,
      Elie

I noticed on my roadtrip that this happened more often than i would have thought, I asked at one of the places why premium was cheaper than 87 octane and they said they were almost out of regular so they were trying to sell more premium.

        weird eh

Usually when you run ethanol-blend in an older car, the alcohol dissolves all the gum and varnish that's accumulated in the gas tank and lines and carb/fuel injectors over the years and it clogs the filters and ports. Sometimes it can be a real mess.

Any other ExxonMobil/Imperial stations in the area? What do their prices look like? Any On the Run or Marché Express or Tiger Express stations to compare?

(I'm just pulling names off Wiki. Don't even know if you have any of those in your parts. )

funny, the lowest octane gas you can get here in sweden is 93 (and its rare as hell) mostly its 95, 96, & 98.

Perhaps thats why you need 200+ hp engines just to go around the block

              Different measures of octane: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

Our lowest normal octane is 87, equivalent to 91-92 in Europe. I run 89 in my car.

Well, I can see 2 major differences when I put the highest and the lowest octane gas in my 1999 Olds Silhouette when during expressway driving:

-A major increase in mileage per gallon efficiency

-The engine “sounds” healthier, like it got a major horsepower boost & drives like it too.

Makes me wonder, is our 87 Octane a "REAL" 87 or less….. .

                  .

@ND66: If you tank at an indian reserve, your 87 octane is probably crappy crappy gas that'll ruin your engine, but if your tanking at a reputable station than it's most likely real 87 octane. At least it SHOULD be.

My current car on the other hand is rated to run with 87 octane and there is no difference what-so-ever between premium and regular. I did notice a difference with my old Saturn SL2. But if I tank up with 87 octane that has 10% ethanol, my engine runs slightly better.

I know it should be, but is not. I'm talking Shell gas station, not just some crappy place.

You know, it could have something to do with my injectors, maybe......... .

Hmm, gas there should be decent. What does your manual recommend you put in? For me it's 87 octane, but maybe your engine can't take anything less than premium?

Well, if it recommends 87 and runs crappy on 87, there might be somthing wrong. Maybe your injectors are dirty, maybe your air filter is dirty.
