  • Would you be treated the same way?

The LAW is equal for everybody, more or less, accept more for the richer and less for the poorer……

I was laughing when they said she qualified for an early “good behavior” release just because she did show up in court.

Medical problem, huh? A cocaine or booze withdrawal?

Paris Hilton is released from L.A. jail

Paris Hilton was released from a Los Angeles County jail early Thursday because of an unspecified medical problem and will fulfill the remainder of her sentence in home confinement, a sheriff's spokesman said.

The 26-year-old hotel heiress was sent home shortly after 2 a.m. fitted with an electronic monitoring bracelet. She had spent five days at the Century Regional Detention Facility in suburban Los Angeles for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

"I can't specifically talk about the medical situation other than to say that, yes, it played a part in this," said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Hilton had been sentenced to 45 days behind bars, but had been expected to serve 23 days because of state rules allowing shorter sentences for good behavior.

Whitmore said that under the new agreement, Hilton would be confined to her home for 40 days.

"Because she has agreed to this through her attorney, her sentence is now back up to the 45 days. She has served already five days so that's 40 days," he explained.

Hilton checked into the Century Regional Detention Facility just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday. She had surrendered to authorities with little fanfare after a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards, where she worked the red carpet in a strapless designer gown.

"I am trying to be strong right now," she told reporters at the time. "I'm ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me, and that's really helpful."

Hilton was housed in the "special needs" unit of the 13-year-old jail, separate from most of its 2,200 inmates. The unit contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. She didn't have a cellmate.

After she checked in Sunday, Whitmore said Hilton's demeanor was helpful.

"She was focused; she was cooperative," he said.

Hilton's lawyer, Richard A. Hutton, said Monday after his client's first night in jail that she was doing well under the circumstances.

"She's using this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better and hopefully, in my opinion, to change the attitudes that exist about her among many people," Hutton said after visiting Hilton.

The 13-year-old jail, a two-story concrete building next to train tracks and beneath a bustling freeway, has been an all-female facility since March 2006. It's located in an industrial area about 12 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

When she was sentenced May 4, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled that she would not be allowed any work release, furloughs or use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail.

Officers arrested Hilton in Hollywood on Sept. 7. In January, she pleaded no contest to the reckless-driving charge and was sentenced to 36 months' probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.

She was pulled over by California Highway Patrol on Jan. 15. Officers informed Hilton she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a document acknowledging she was not to drive. She then was pulled over by sheriff's deputies on Feb. 27, at which time she was charged with violating probation.

I guess that being rich has it perks. Wonder how much it cost her to get out?

Comments on this from around the world:

Here are a selection of your comments on the news of Paris Hilton's release from jail:

It is funny that Paris Hilton should develop a medical condition at the prospect of spending her full term in jail. It is funnier to know officials fell for her story.

As The old saying goes," Money Talks".
Christine Winney, Whitefish Bay Wisconsin. U.S.

That just stinks. If she were having a mental breakdown then let her serve her time in a mental ward. Any other medical problem is treatable in jail. And that's where she should be.
            Joey Salaun, Jacksonville, Florida USA

I'm disgusted at the fact that every normal woman would have to have carried out a full sentence. It makes me sick that because socialites have money that they don't have to do this. It is unfair and disgraceful. Why should money eliminate you from doing the time when they have clearly continued to do crimes? Unfair to us normal every day people.
            Holly, Ipswich

Her medical problem was claustrophobia. Jails tend to induce that in people. But, most people are ignored when they complain about their fear of being in a confined space. Must be nice to be a member of the elite and exempt from the law or rules.
            Jack Tucker, Texas

This is a slap in the face to the people who actually have to pay for their crimes!
            Adrian Niculescu, Milano, Italy

House arrest for Paris Hilton means living in a palace with every possible diversion a young (or old!) person could want at her fingertips. She should be ordered to spend house arrest in a one bed flat somewhere . . . by herself. What a joke.
            Charlie Levante, London

I think we just saw money and influence at work. If Paris Hilton had been a nobody person I doubt if they would have released her on "medical grounds". We see this sort of thing a lot around here in Nigeria. But in America? Methinks they've been watching too many corruption movies.

One law for the rich! I hope the bracelet has real diamonds!
            Steve Franklin, Borehamwood, England

Good for her!!! But a sudden quote just came in my mind from the classic novel Animal Farm, "All Are Equal But Some Are More Equal Than Others" One part of my mind (Good Part) saying, Even though I don't know her she seems to be nice by look and she is in house arrest anyway. Another part of my mind (Bad Part!!!) saying what if a Poor Guy committed the same crime. In fact drunk driving is in fact a serious crime that's what we been told. In the end who am I to decide until I get killed in the street by a drunk driver....
            Stan, Toronto, Canada

What sort of deterrent is it and it smacks of favouritism for who she is. It would be interesting to know how many other people in her situation from less privileged backgrounds were offered the same get out of jail free card! By not saying on what medical grounds she was released is only adding fuel to the fire. If it was publicised then people would be more understanding
            Kaz, Wales

This is right along the lines for celebrity treatment here in the US. Remember OJ Simpson? I can't believe things like this are allowed to happen. What about all the other inmates in that jail and others, who can't stand where they are? Some of them must have medical conditions too. Are we going to let them all go home?

Yup, the judge is pissed at the sheriff. He doesn't have a power to change the judge sentence, yet he did.....

...The decision by Sheriff Lee Baca to move Hilton chafed prosecutors and Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer, who spelled out during sentencing that Hilton was not allowed to serve house detention.

Late Thursday, Sauer issued the order for Hilton to return to court after the city attorney filed a petition demanding that Hilton be returned to jail and to show cause why Baca shouldn't be held in contempt of court.

The Judge wants the Sheriff, prosecutor etc. in court & is PISSED.

This morning the Sheriff told reporters Paris could PHONE IN her testimony

The Judge went thermal and sent a Sheriff's deputy to drag her a$$ into court

Heard more on what she did in jail; cried, wouldn't eat, complained of "hard pillows" & kept pressing the medical panic button in her cell.

                  Poor baby

It's still less than she deserves, but I hope she is sent straight to jail: do not pass GO, do not collect $200

Looks like she may share the cell with the sheriff......

I get the feeling Judge Sauer is not one to be trifled with as reports are that he's royally PISSED at both the Sheriff and Paris. He was appointed 35+ years ago by then Governor Ronald Reagan, so odds are he's not a liberal.

She's likely headed back to the pokey and Judge Sauer will retain jurisdiction until the end of not only her jail time but her whole probation. IIRC that is > 2 years, so she'd better watch herself.

Also; the Prosecutor has petitioned the court (8 pages worth) to hold the Sheriff in contempt of court, so he could end up in the pokey too.

4-5 Sheriff's cars have arrived at her house, so LA's in for another freeway parade
