Every octagon switch will trip the trap door connected to the hole. The trigger in one way only, so if you hit a single one the game is over. To make it more fun, you have to trip the X switch to finish the puzzle. The X switch only brings up a single square that you have to land on just the right way to change your trajectory back towards the hole to get across the bridge. That one took some time.
