References for server exam questions?

A friend needs to write a few paragraphs on a couple of these items relating to web servers, and is (as am I) failing to find a good reference for them.

Select any two administrative features of a web server from the following list and write a report describing them:

• Setting permissions
• Turning server on/off
• Website as an application
• Website as a system service
• Changing server configuration.

The course material is really hit and miss. Sometimes it covers the activities in good detail, others it is completely ignored and barely gives a context. Sure I can waffle an answer but a good reference would be better!

Oh, I dunno. Without a context you just make one up. Either it's running on IIS or Apache. Probably Apache. Go.
