What a horrible ordeal. Not surprising that the land company even tries placing the blame on the couple, saying it's their fault they didn't pay their taxes... that they didn't know they even had.

Aren't you supposed to get a tax bill every year? If so, it would have been wise for them to verify with the land company to make sure they didn't owe anything rather than do nothing and assume everything was alright. Not sure how it works when it concerns these types of things.

Pishposh! If the government wants your money, the government is obligated to let you know that they want your money.

Well, since this is what I do for a living:

I started to write a long list of what was wrong with their property tax laws.
But further reading shows they are fine.

Just a lazy bunch, not doing their jobs.
Hopefully, whoever is in charge will be canned.
Or if an elected official, recalled.

There is one thing odd.
Here if an account is a homestead (meaning the owner lives in it) which I gather theirs is then the a deputy has to go to the home itself and post a notice of it's upcoming sale.
This would be before it was sold for taxes.
It's entirely to prevent this sort of thing and is required by law.

Don't they have anything like that?
I mean, people make mistakes.
The system is supposed to account for that.

Yes, you'd think that they'd get a hand-delivered notice BEFORE the sheriff shows up to evict them.
