  • My Dell 2407-HC LCD panel review

Ok here's the 411 on the LCD.

    Setup
Unpacked and setup = easy, the stand which swivles and height adjustable clamps on easily to the panel, once you have the LCD on your desk it is a bit dificult to get at the connectors, must tilt the screen forward to connect anything = (minor issue)

    Configuration

When I first turned the panel on, it defaults to input 1 which is VGA, I had the DVI connection to the video card which is the second input, this was easy to switch, first button, press it once and it cycles from input 1 to 5.
I didn't even read the manual yet and I was able to setup brightness/contrast and RGB levels, I set it to PC-Blue which seems to be very nice

The brightness and contrast are not set to max, it becomes too bright then.

I also connected the USB from the PC to the LCD and connected the mouse and keyboard to the LCD directly (cool feature)

    Heat
Didn't realize it but this thang runs a bit on the hot side, there are vents on the top, if you put your hand there, you can tell how hot it is, also the panel itself is hot, if you put your hand 1/2 CM close to the panel you can tell how hot this thing is. (hope it's normal for panels since I don't have too much experience with them)

    Quality

Desktp looks great at 1900x1200 everything is crisp and not one burnt pixel, all is good, colour reproduction is very good as well, I'm impressed.

DVD quality, well here is where I start noticing some grain, and I'm not overly excited about the playback quality via Component in, I would have thought it would be identical to my Hi resolution JVC broadcast editing monitor sitting right next to it, but no the JVC is far superior to it.
I connected my DVD player's component out to the Dell and Svideo to the JVC and still the JVC beat it hands down!!!

however the 16:9 playback is a welcomed feature and I can enjoy the directors view of a movie (I don't yet have a 16:9 tv at home, that will come soon)

My Pioneer DVD player has a feature to playback at 480P when I set it up and watched a movie the grain around the edges was highly noticeable (could be a player issue)

HD playback, again I was not over impressed, the grain is noticeable, when i am a foot or two away from the panel, if I move back over 5 feet it starts to look better, I have my AXIO LE connected via component to the Panel with some HDV footage I downloaded for testing purposes, and one clip was bad, the second clip was much better and you can tell it was HD. I thought it would be much better than that though.

    Conclusion

Now I didn't buy this screen to strictly watch HD or DVD's, the desktop quality is amazing, crisp, clean and bright, just hoped the DVD/HD playback was much better, but i do not regret the purchase, maybe I am a bit picky about quality.

Oh if there is anything specific you want me to test, please let me know.

    let the discussions begin....

    Cheers,
    Elie

I'm not sure if the 2407 is the same as the 2405, but I'm pretty sure my 2405's power down the USB hub when they're turned off. I think the hubs are left on while they're in power save mode, but I'm not sure.

If you normally turn off your monitors at night, you may want to plug the keyboard and mouse directly into the computer.

Then again, maybe it's a feature - at least the cats/kids can't screw anything up until the monitor is turned on

We got one of these in work to test out, and I'm using it at home. Well actually I have the L245WP which is the previous one, but its the same thing... they just changed the power button.
Shop Computer Monitors from LG Electronics. Make the Most Out of Your Work or Gaming with the Right LG Monitor. Explore 4K, 5K, and Curved LG Displays.

I'm quite pleased with it. Construction is superior to the Dell monitors, as is the scalar/video engine in the monitor. HDMI, Component, and D-Sub, plus a USB hub.

            Update:

Whenever you want to test HD at 1080p what better that to try content from www.quicktime.com

I'm changing my original view about HD playback, all I can say is holy smokes!!!
It as crips as can be, totally cool!

DVD playback remains questionable, i will play around and see what I can do.

            Cheers,
            Elie

I've a 2407 at home (and at work ) and the component in, at least from the 360 is over saturated, vga connection for the 360 looks great though.
