  • Earthquake!

Small one but the worst I've experienced, as it was shallow and we were very close to the epicentre (our house is roughly where the C of CMSO is on the above map). The magnitude was 3.5-4.2 Richter. I estimate the movement was about ±3 cm horizontally in an E-W direction, no discernible vertical movement. It scared the shits out the dog, who ran up the stairs and stayed there for ½ an hour. The wife was also upset. I phlegmatically remained seated watching the DVD of The Prestige and replied calmly to wifey's question..., "Only a small earthquake!"

Damage: AFAICS, no structural damage to house. A tool panel on the garage wall was torn from its anchors and fell on the bonnet of the car, requires respray.

No aftershocks and they are unlikely as a) it was not on a known fault line and is just a minor crack and b) it was very shallow (only 10 km). The dog was fast asleep when it hit!

Every 30-40 years we are hit by a big one (7+), since the last one was in 1977 you never know when it's going to hit.
There was actually quite a media frenzy in the last years, doom & gloom with "experts" popping out allover to tell about it.

ADM: the 2000 one was quite scary too... (although not 7)

Believe it or not Michigan gets 'em periodically too; there's a fault under northern Ohio & Lake Erie that lets go every 10-15 years or so. Most of the time the epicenter is near Cleveland or Ashtabula, Ohio so that region gets the worst of it, generally a 3.5 to 5.0 with the Detroit area getting a 2.5 to 4+.

Not much unless you're in a multi-story building, in which case things dance around the floor, plaster & glass cracks, the shelves empty and nerves get frayed. A lot of people in single story ranch homes say "Earthquake? What earthquake?" or they complain about a presumed sonic boom from the fighters at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

I've visited one, but nobody was home at the time.

Brian, did you hear the earthquake too, or just feel it? On the Oklahoma Geological Survey Observatory site they've got a list of similar small, shallow quakes with reports that often include hearing bangs, booms, or other sounds.

Hope you can understand Michael Caine's accent! It doesn't show up Tesla very well, but then it would be difficult to do so, at that stage in his life. I don't think I've seen another film with so many twists in the plot!

There was some noise, but I'm not sure how to describe it other than very secondary to the movement.

Want plot twists? Try "Se7en", "The Usual Suspects", "Fight Club", "Shawshank Redemption" and "Sixth Sense". They turn Occam's Razor on its head.

Which isn't saying the Sixth Sense is BAD, its just that the others are all so good
(Honestly haven't seen it, but I've seen/own all the others).

The Prestige probably does have MORE twists, not necessarily better.

ok, "way lower" was a bit exaggerated statement...

sixth sense is not a bad movie but not as good as the other 4 either
