they did a lot of camping with absolutely no action or mention of anything from the outside world.

i thought it was interesting that at one point when they were camping, they had friends camping right next to them and they didnt leave their tent they just listened in.. why was that for again? i maybe have to reread that bit.

another thing. why is it that they couldnt just make themselves go really far away like to an exotic warm location on a beach they could sit and really make a list of the things they needed to do? instead of camping in a different spot every night in the same country. did i miss something again? i havent read all the books so im not fully familiar with everything

Wow, I had completely forgotten the plot to these. I just remember them being great when I was like... 10. And they're STILL great. It's rare that you find a "young adults' author" that is equally readable by adults without "dumbing down".

I'm about halfway through the 5 books now, and I can see why they chose the second ("The Dark Is Rising") to make into a movie, although the first ("Over Sea and Under Stone") still remains my favorite.
actually talked about this series earlier today when a Hairy Potter fan brought up the up coming movie.

        very good series!

Harry was "trying to figure out where to go" and sort of hoping that they'd end up in the right place. *snicker* Much like JKR was "trying to figure out how to milk 10 year olds for as much $$ as possible without really wrapping up the story well".

Indeed! I just finished the third book, and it's great stuff! Ok, admittedly it's a little too "ooh watch all this stuff just sort of HAPPEN to the main character" for what I'd normally enjoy, but it's just SO DAMN WELL WRITTEN, and quite the compelling story.
