  • California wildfire - What a disaster!

Hope the prognosis on the winds easing are accurate….

The devastating wildfires in Southern California have caused at least $1 billion in damage in San Diego County alone, officials said Wednesday, while firefighters hoped easing wind would give them an advantage in stopping the flames.

The fires, now in their fourth day, have destroyed 1,500 homes and caused at least a half-million people to flee — the largest evacuation in state history. At least 1,200 of the damaged homes were in San Diego County.

"Clearly, this is going to be a $1 billion or more disaster," Ron Lane, San Diego County's director of emergency services, told reporters during a news conference.

The announcement of San Diego's staggering losses came as President Bush signed a major disaster declaration for California in the wake of wildfires that have burned about 410,000 acres, or 640 square miles.......

    ......

Exhausted firefighters hoped fighting the 16 fires would become easier with an expected slackening of the fierce Santa Ana wind that has stoked the explosive blazes. Forecasters said the wind will begin to weaken late Wednesday afternoon, followed by cooling sea breezes.

    ........

Grijalva said the fires, spread by winds that at times topped 100 mph, would have overwhelmed most efforts to fight them.

    ............

So far, the fires have inflicted the worst damage in San Diego County, where five blazes continued to burn. The largest fire had consumed 196,420 acres — about 300 square miles — from Witch Creek to Rancho Santa Fe, destroying 650 homes, businesses and other buildings. Other hard-hit areas included San Bernardino County, where hundreds of homes burned in the mountain resort communities near Lake Arrowhead.

I wonder if peoples home insurances will cover this, being a natural disaster, not just a regular house fire

        so far:

        420,424 acres burned
        1,155 homes destroyed
        881,500 people evacuated

        from LA Times.

Fire victims can now apply for federal aid

        10:23 AM PDT, October 24, 2007

To the federal government, an emergency is not a disaster, and the difference between the two is huge for homeowners.

President Bush's declaration this morning of a "major disaster" in Southern California means the government will provide direct financial assistance to people who have lost property and other possessions in this week's wildfires.

On Tuesday, Bush had declared a "state of emergency," which freed up federal dollars to help the state pay for emergency workers and efforts to protect life, health and property, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The disaster declaration expands federal assistance to individuals.

"Today I've signed a major disaster declaration, which will then enable federal funds to start heading toward the families who have been affected by these fires," Bush said at the White House, a day before he is scheduled to visit burn areas across Southern California.

Once residents begin returning to their homes and assessing the damage, they will be allowed to file for FEMA reimbursement, said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

Until then, general information on federal disaster assistance is available through FEMA at (800) 621-FEMA (3362) or www.fema.gov/.

          I wonder....

I think normally they don't since it's an act of god, but when you think 1500 homes have been destoyed, someone needs to step in.

In some cases not so natural, several of the fires have been labeled as arson.

They arrested one guy who was running around on a motorcycle setting fire to the hill sides. He got caught because he did it while a police helicopter was flying overhead

The FBI, state and locals just raided his house.

Ya I was thinking of that.

It could be even "accidental", like dropping a cigarette out the window etc. But try and prove that to the insurance company.

Proof is academic if the arson inspectors put the cause in their reports. Even insurance companies know when to quit because of what some jury might do.

would an arsonist like that be classified a terrorist then?

Quite possible, especially given that now two of the major fires are suspected of being arson. It just gets deeper.

                            And these bastards too:

Six Mexican illegal immigrants were arrested for stealing food and water from a southern California evacuation center housing victims of the devastating fire that has been proclaimed a natural disaster by the president. .... The six thieves admitted that they were indeed illegal immigrants from Mexico taking advantage of a devastating situation.
