Roger Waters changed the world. I must admit at times he sort of annoys me, but when he's making music I have nothing but respect for the man.

I must confront you with the facts
Floyd's first 3 albums sounded fantastic. then Syd Barrett lost his damn mind, and David Gilmour joined the band. the band's sound changed dramatically.
Waters still wrote his stupid/ pretentious / boring "quality" lyrics (which I don't give a flying F$%^ about).
But the simple truth is that musically he's got nothing (as I said, I don't give a crap about his kind of tedious lyrics). he never did. it's the people he worked with, that created (also overrated) magic.
If you compare them to other progressive rock bands of their time (Yes , Genesis , Van Der Graaf Generator , Gentle Giant , ELP , Frank Zapa ...), you'd realize that they are a just a step above pop.
Just listen to the waste-of-otherwise-perfectly-harmless-vinyl he released since Floyed parted with his ego.

Uh, say whatever you want about Roger Waters but you can't deny The Final Cut(IMHO, the BEST Pink Floyd album).

I hate to break your bubble, but I do own Piper and Saucerful, I'm not just another fan who jumped on the Another Brick train.
And I'm a huge King Crimson, Zappa, Genesis fan too.
I don't like wasting time classifying how good a band is by how much they fit into a certain genre. I love Tool - but Tool fans drive me nuts trying to classify them.

In addition, Roger Waters' Amused to Death is worth repeated listening.

Tool is beyond classification. no doubt. when Lateralus was released I zoomed out for a month. though I must admit 10k wasn't their finest work.
Floyed like most bands who made the leap from prodigy to 70k-spectators-Stadium super group are a little boring for my taste.
under the 'leadership' of Waters they repeated themselves to death, and pass 1973 never truly went all the way.
and (other then Waters) there was real talent in that group. Just listen to the incredible work Nick Mason did with Robert Wyatt.
