  • bloody sunday-drivers....

Just some background information to understand: in Belgium, it is forbidden to overtake on the right (must return to rightmost lane) and it is forbidden to accelerate whilst being overtaken.

So I was driving, and approached a car that kept driving at approx. 100 kph (120 kph allowed) in the middle lane. I moved to the left lane, and the other car accelerates to over 120 kph, I reposition behind it, only to see it slow down again . This happened twice, so I decided to just overtake it. In this third attempt, a large BMW was really close to me, I accelerated past 130 kph, only to see the other two cars slam hard on the brakes... bright flash... and I'm pretty sure I have my first speeding ticket.

My speedometer showed just above 130 kph (I'm guessing 132 kph), the maximum allowed speed was
120 kph and they take a 6 percent margin. The fine is 50 euro when driving 11 kph too fast, and then 5 euro for each additional kph. Guess those idiots will cost me 50-70 euro...

Well the first ticket in about 60000 km...

    Sorry to hear that VJ,
But the best thing to do in those circumstance is too lay on them with the car horn. I find either they speed up to get away from you or they slow right down, (where I tend to slow down too just to tease them a bit). Then I speed off into the highway. It works especially if you are in the right.
Don't try this on local roads where there are traffic lights, the other driver could be bigger than you.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean; we were on the highway.
I drive a small car (VW Polo, positioned just below the VW Golf), and find such things one of the main gripes when driving a small car. Driving my parents Volvo 850 is much more relaxed: people move out of the way, opposing traffic doesn't cut corners as much, cars behind you seem to keep more distance, cars don't leave their lane just in front of you, they don't feel offended when passed (as opposed to when being passed by a small car), ...

This afternoon there also was this car that kept on the leftmost lane at 100 kph. I approached it, moved from the rightmost lane behind it, kept my left indicator on, there was plenty of room on the middle lane for it to move to.... no response. In my mirror a saw a Volvo 4x4 approaching in the distance, so I go to the middle lane, the sunday driver also saw the Volvo and promply moved out of the way! I was driving several kilometers behind it! And to top it off, he accelerated to 130 kph when I tried to overtake him (slowed down again a bit further).

Honestly, such behaviour makes driving a small car much less pleasant, more frustrating and dangerous.

morons like that should loose their licence
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

Same here, not that it stops people from regularly breaking the law.

Don't worry. I made a scratch on some hairdresser sallon's facade while parking. Very understanding and cute police woman fined me only 105 euros. No speeding tickets so far though I'm guilty .

              Yay. I hear you.

there are plenty of people here who think they own the fast lane, or sit in the middle lane of the motorway, when there are no other cars about, even...

I'm happy i don't drive to work anymore...I used to get pissed off at people going up the hard shoulder, and one day, i just blocked one of the f**kers.
He followed me for a couple of km's, trying to overtake at one point ( I hit 6000rpm so he wouldn't)...didn't do it again, but I just got angrier, and spent a lot of time spinning the wheels out of frustration...
start and stop traffic ? more like Wheelspin, 5krpm, stop. smoke, smoke again, wheelspin....

Glad i'm not doing it anymore, but being unemployed is worse

edit : the trick here is you have to come up behind someone sooo fast, they have to get out of the way or you will shunt them...scary to watch, but most 4x4's (BMW and Merc's, and VW Touareg's) do it...

Good thing we barely have 2 & more lanes roads here (but OTOH when on a highway (raaarely), and it's 2-lane here exclusively, I somehow can floor the gas pedal most of the time, hmm...)

Sorry Vj, I guess I didn't explain myself well.
I've run into the same kind of thing that happened with you, We have a lot of selfish drivers over here too.
The last time this happened to me, the car sped up with me to prevent me from passing him. ( two lane highway ) so I had to back off and go back behind him, He then dropped his speed back to below the speed limit. Instead of trying to pass him again, I pressed on the car horn and did not let up on it. I didn't just " honk" "honk" I hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo......... and it flustered the driver really bad. He flipped me the finger, and hit the brakes a couple of times, until he pulled over to allow me to pass. Of course I did pass with the guy punching his fist at me in the air. By then a few cars had lined up behind me and passed him also. I never saw the guy again.
I guess what I was saying is that the horn can be your friend, as it's really annoying.

And I wish you can report these guy that play these kind of games on the road, as they should have the licence taken away from them as Technoid says

You guys know nothing about bad driving until you try it here. All you have discussed is child's play: wait until you meet the pros at bad driving!

If it is anything like in Istanbul.... (4 cars next to each other at the traffic lights, where there are only 3 lanes; one of the cars was a police car; using the horn at a police car as it isn't going fast enough, ....)
