  • Communists too conservative?

This is not intended to be political, but is almost too funny for words, actually rather pathetic. Please don't turn this into a political discussion.

Personae: The speaker of the Cyprus House of Representatives, Demetris Christofias, is the leader of AKEL, the Cyprus Communist Party, the most left-wing party on the island. The Governor of the Bank of Cyprus, Athanasios Orphanides, a rather right wing conservative and pro-American, had his appointment ratified by the centre-right wing government, led by President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Christofias has accused Orphanides as being a neo-liberal. I think something has got itself mixed up here! Guess Joe Stalin and Chairman Mao must have been neo-cons!

Not trying to turn this political but I believe the euro-continental view on "liberlism" is quite at odds with the anglo-saxon view. Any liberal party in Europe is ussually on the right side of the political spectrum whereas, it seems to me, within the US, "liberal" is associated with left-wing-side politics.

And yes, Communists are typically conservative in the sense that they tend to keep on viewing a changing world through the same frame-of-reference re. markets, value, wealth, class strugle etc. regardless of how well it actually fits.

Goes with my poli-sci professors theory that extremists of both right and left converge and become totalitarians. He'd draw this 'clock' with 'centerists' at 12:00 noon +/- 15 minutes, liberals between 8:00 and 11:45, conservatives between 12:15 and 4:00 and anyone between 4:00 and 8:00 were classified as varying degrees of totalitarians. 6:00 was reserved for people like Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin etc.
