A fun site to browse when you have time is roadabletimes : it lists a number of past and current designs for flying personal vehicles.
(if only Rutan would work on this...... )

Some of them are on the right track...but, if you got rid of wings/rotors (as I said, not fit for flying car IMHO), you have to do a little better than deployeable parachute in case of engine failure. (dunno...retrorockets? They have their own set of problems, I imagine...)

Overall, I think I can see from where you're coming, VJ
You're a pilot that can't wait affordable, small, personall, etc. planes that would be capable of beeing used also on the road, more or less (?) Well..."flying car" IMHO has to be something a little different.

The movie did see computers being used in homes, but the thinking is all so analogue still. And look at the role models it's portrayng! Life now is entirely different from what the movie "predicts" - and I'm not trying to ridicule it. Everything Gurm said applies. Although I think in hindsight we'll be stunned by how unastounded we will have taken all the progress. Look at how naturally we all use the Internet, and yet, twenty years ago, it wasn't even science fiction!

BTW Gurm, recently I was thinking about making, in the far future, T-shirts with "I actually used modems/sub-gigabit connection/visible computers" or something like that

              Plenty of other designs possible:

In my days, DOS didn't mean Denial Of Service (but it was close) .

My first monitor showed all colours, as long as they were green.

I used floppy disks, backed up on tape.

In my days, starting a word processor meant rebooting the computer.
(was the case on a Schneider Amstrad)

              ...

Uh, uh! How could I forgot!
