  • Jiffy Frosting HELP PLEASE!

    Ok, Julie has made a request - anyone who can obtain Jiffy White Frosting mix near them ... we need a couple boxes. If we order from Jiffy it will never get here in time for Christmas! I beg of you - if you have some, or can get some near you (the closest store which carries it to us is NEW YORK), I'll gladly pay for 2-day shipping to get it here for the weekend!

    THANKS!

    We live <40 miles from the Jiffy factory and can get Jiffy-anything everywhere, almost by the ton and cheap as hell. If you want we'll box it up and send it tomorrow & you can send us the fee by return post. Just PM me your address etc.

        Thanky kindly! Return payment by PayPal has been sent, with an appropriately disturbing "reason for payment".

              It's a powder mix, meaning you can add it to cookie recipes to lighten their texture/add flavor.

              Doing that with pre-mixed frosting can result in unpredictable results.

              Jiffy is a major brand in the midwest and northeast produced in Chelsea, Michigan by the Chelsea Milling Company. They're known for high quality products at low prices...everything from a Bisquick clone (actually a bit better IMO), corn bread, pie crust, fudge and numerous other mixtures most of which cost well under $1. Even the Bisquick clone costs under $2.

              The stuff I got for Gurm runs 60-75 cents a box, depending on the store.

                Well Doc has given the theoretical answer.
                GURM's turn to give us the specifics.

                  Well, Julie uses it in her Christmas confections. It's essentially... it's a proprietary mix of confectioner's sugar, starches, a little bit of "something buttery". The EASIEST way to use it is to just add 2Tbsp. of boiling water and POW, instant frosting. But beyond that as Doc said it can make cookies have that extra OOMPH because it can be mixed into dough evenly and then baked!

                  Julie's Christmas Sugar Cookies are a family tradition going back to when she was a girl and she and her mom came up with them.

                  One or two years we've tried to do them without Jiffy Frosting, and although I came CLOSE (as I said above - X-Sugar, Corn starch, cream of tartar, etc.) it wasn't quite right.

                  The issue is that Jiffy - being a company in that odd bracket of "big enough to have worldwide distribution but small enough to be managed by a handful of people" - is VERY reactive to markets. They modify their sales and distribution on a quarterly basis. As a result, you can go to their website and see where you can get any given Jiffy product, which is great! But... also as a result, if White Frosting doesn't sell very well in New England (which it doesn't), they YANK it. We couldn't get it at all in PA when we lived there, had to have Julie's stepmom send it down yearly from Western Mass. but now it's not even THERE!

                      That's a pretty cool product locator. Talk about streamlined business.

                      Apparently I can get Jiffy White Frosting mix here too. Jiffy Corn Bread and muffin mixes are my favorite. I'll have to try adding the frosting mix to cookies. That should be fun.

                            And for a small family owned business they're kicking butt and taking names;

                            News story (part);

                            Vision for the future

                            Future plans for the growth of Chelsea Milling Company include looking at the food service industry that includes restaurants and hotels. "To increase the share of the stomach you have to find other channels of distribution."

                            In the home baking market, representing ingredients, mixes, and frozen foods, Jiffy Mix has 56.2 percent of the share of the stomach. Chelsea Milling Company is followed by companies such as General Mills and Pillsbury. Their corn muffin mix is the seventh fastest moving dry grocery item in the United States. Holmes stated proudly, "We do a good job at what we do."

                              I can vouch that their cornbread mix is awesome. Just the right amount of sweet and moist, as someone that has tried to make it from scratch I can promise you its hard to do well. That and I can see how jiffy frosting might actually stay on your shelf till you make a cake. I've lost track of how many girlfriends will get a 'craving' and that frosting mix is GONE long before you even think of making a cake.
