Starting Jan 1, 2008 and continuing until March 31, 2009 the US govt. will be taking applications for $40 vouchers, 2 per household, which can be used to help pay for HD broadcast to "regular TV" converter boxes.
This is in preparation for the Feb, 2009 shutdown of conventional over the air TV broadcasts and their conversion to digital HD over the air broadcasts which legacy TV's will not be able to receive.
Better get in the application early as the program is as usual under-funded. OTOH if you can't get one Best Buy has them for about $69 USD (saw them last weekend). Price likely to drop as more manufacturers start shipping them.
