Local word has come out that the Hamtramck, MI plant where the Chevy Volt be produced will shut down for tooling in May 2009 and reopen in September for production before the previously stated 2010 date. This could well be a fleet of test vehicles and a coincident testing of the line, but it's certainly earlier than most had expected.
Support for this comes from one of the teams who'll be producing Volts batteries; Continental/A123. When asked if their advanced nanophosphate LiION's (patent just granted) will be both in production and in a production vehicle, Continental CEO William Kozyra stated flatly; “Absolutely, Specifically in the Chevrolet Volt in late 2009.â€
