    F1 2008: They're off!

    This weekend saw a great start to the season. Way more action packed that previous seasons, primarily due to the removal of traction control.

    I feel most sorry for Kovy. Were it not for the 3rd appearance of the safety car it would have been a McLaren 1-2 on the podium.

    And hot on its heels next weekend we have Malaysia to look forward to

    Glad to see the fuel-burning fase in the last qualifying session is gone. That was something quite pointless...

    Didn't get to see the race, but may catch the highlights tonight (la deux shows them).

        The new no-development rules of last fall are in effect, yes?

        If so I have no interest at all in F1.

        Development should not be so limited or they should race go karts, one or the other.

          Watch out for a big shift. KERS is the future for F1. That and exciting racing with overtaking again

                      I am waiting to see how it is going to be here in Singapore...correct me if i'm wrong, i think it is going to be the first time to have them racing in a city circuit at night

                        I see this morning that the BBC have won the rights back from ITV starting in 2009 They promise state of the art coverage on all their broadcast media - could be interesting.

                        At first I was worried, when you think back to 1996 and before the BBC just showed the race itself. ITV improved massively on that, but with the drawback of adverts. Let's hope (and I'm fairly confident they wont) that they don't take a step backwards.

                          Wow....

                          I personally really like the ITV coverage (and am willing to suffer the ads): they really get into the whole racing weekend. The interviews, the legendary grid-walk, ... all add to the atmosphere... . I hope BBC can indeed keep this level (and that they broadcast it on BBC1 or BBC2). Of course, the snooker and tennis coverage on BBC is also excellent, so they may be able to keep the high standard.

                          Regarding the gridwalk/interviews, some memorable moments
                          - Hey it is mister Mittal (of Mittal steel). How are you doing?
                          - Great! Fun atmosphere.
                          - Are you trying to convince the teams to user more steel in the cars?
                          - Yes, but it isn't catching on...

                          - Let's see if we can get a word with king Carlos...
                          (tries to push security out of the way, gets help from... the king)

                          - I wonder if we can approach this person (dunno who, but he was talking to Bernie)
                          (security stops him)
                          - HEY BERNIE, could you give us a hand here?
                          (Bernie pulls the reporter through security)

                          (walks into the McLaren box, half an hour before the race)
                          - Is Ron here?
                          - He is in the back, you'll find him there
                          I wonder how many reporters get to do that!

                          Those things just all add to it...
                          As does the fact that they manage to interview unfortunate drivers just moments after they had their incident, and the great technical knowledge of those reporting.

                            Absolutely, and its entirely possible the current team will switch to BBC, just as Murray et al made the reverse journey in 1996.

                            Martin didn't have so much luck on the grid last weekend, I think tensions were running quite high.

                            This week the broadcasts start around 6am here, so I'll probably get up for them.
