  • Members Only Lounge?

It's come up in convo in IM with a few of us MURC'ers. Before I poke the big hairy admin TOO much about this I wanted to see if this was something the group as a whole would be interested in.

Do we want a Member's Only Lounge here at MURC? Either you'd have to be a full Murcer/Super Murcer/Invite only to see it and it wouldn't show up in Google searches.

Why? Lets be honest there are things we don't post here for the same reason we don't hang our laundry out to dry on a livejournal. You CAN but do you really want strangers seeing specifics about you or being able to find you accidently in a google search? Murc has gotten smaller over the years so most of the people left are close knit, but we don't use IRC much anymore. A Member's only lounge lets us use more specifics in a conversation and talk about things we'd not posted about because you don't want it googled, but you wouldn't have minded sharing to the group itself or asked about it.. in group.

I'm pretty sure this version of vBulletin can handle this kind of thing out of the box too.

    So... anyone intersted?

I'm sure most of us use a fictitious username anyway, so it's a non-issue in that aspect. I'd rather have that regular members have to 'think' eachother's personal name when they see a nick (of those they know), than to make an assumption that they can freely post on the net using their real name and finding out that it's not a good idea afterwards.

Oh and I'm not saying we all start calling each other by our first names (though some do on here anyway). Honestly, most of us long term murcers practice good forum/net practices here as it is. This is more to give us the option to speak candidly just to the group we've basically become 'tight' with already without worrying about the other people out there. Admins already do this in their own forum and we talk to each other individually in private messages. This is just more of the same.

I vote yes. Even though we rarely use our own names (cough *brian* cough), if you wanted to I'm sure you could dig up enough through murc to track down a lot of us.

And for goodness sake, don't let Garry Denke in!

        Cheers,

        Boris.

I vote yes, I have a couple friends that know I am on here, and I think some of my family. I don't think they are "spying" on me, but still...

I can understand why you'd want it, but as Dilitante points out: all the login members would be able to visit it.

Unless you set a required minimum post count (e.g. only visible for people with more than a couple of 100 posts)...

Or you make a new forum that needs to be subscribed to and establish a committee to decide on subscriptions. No clue whether that is easy to do. Might cause more work and worries than benefits.

Well honestly that was the point. 'secret' is relative. Personally I'd recommend a super murcer minimum by default since honestly... Almost all of us are one at this point. This is an 'old' forum and we've culled back to the regulars at this point. full Murcers that have gotten past mini-murcer can be added in pretty easily. Hell I'd be willing to be the admin for the forum.

We don't NEED this but I thought it would be interesting. However, it could be useful. I had to poke Gurm a few times to take out info he had in his job posts since he was using names and numbers that was unwise in an open forum that can show up in google. We don't need to become a bunch of whiney b*tches either but being able to vent to each other doesn't hurt either.

You know... funny I use Gurm as an example of decorum considering his past around here Well, he HAS mellowed over the last couple years. I only had to beat him into a presentable member of society a little bit.... but daily
