  • The Andromeda Strain on A&E

After watching part one of The Andromeda Strain tonight, I'm prepared to state for the record that this movie sucks.

The acting is passable, considering the dialogue is as hackneyed as I've ever heard. All of the basic plot-points are there, but the story has been unnecessarily padded with political machinations and sinister shadow government - black ops cliches. Add to that the plot contrivance of a "singularity" ("Wormhole") opening near Earth to deliver what everyone automatically assumes is the vanguard of an alien attack (everyone does a lot of assuming in this movie).

Most of the main characters have been altered to one degree or another, a few beyond recognition, with others added for no other reason than to generate artificial conflict.

I can understand the producers wanting to update the material and make things more "edgy." But this has all of the earmarks of the producers having no confidence in the source material's ability to sustain itself. Ridley Scott should be embarrassed.

The original Robert Wise movie is 130 of the most intense minutes ever put on screen. This is four hours (more like 3, minus the commercials) of garbage. I haven't even decided whether to bother watching part two.

Besides, I counted at least three of those Elvis-raping Viagra commercials, including one with the old-fart band. I wish those guys would just die already.

I saw a commercial for it and laughed. Didn't even bother recording it.
