GM says all-electric Volt approved for 2010 launch

WILMINGTON, Delaware (Reuters) - General Motors Corp said on Tuesday its all-electric Chevrolet Volt was on track for a launch in 2010 after the company's board approved funding for production of the high-profile plug-in vehicle.

"We intend to show the production version of the Chevy Volt publicly in the near future," Wagoner said.

GM has been testing two sets of battery packs supplied by a subsidiary of Korea's LG Chem Ltd, and German auto parts supplier Continental AG using technology developed by privately held A123 Systems.

GM product chief Bob Lutz said he expected to name a Volt battery supplier "soon" without elaborating.

I sure hope so. They need a big seller to replace the 4 factories and 12 lines they just trashed this week.

As mentioned previously Volt is just part of the changeover. There will be other E-Flex vehicles from Cadillac, Saturn and a sh*tload for the international market from Opel (one of these is at the GM test track now) and quite possibly eastern makers. The 'guess' list is topped by China's Chery and of course GM's Daweoo division.

        UPDATE:

        More news from GM -

The Hummer will be either discontinued, redesigned or sold to another maker.

Also: GM will build a new 40+ mpg compact Chevy on the "Delta Global" platform (same as the Volt) and debut it at an auto show later this year. Production will start as early as 2009.

It's likely to be produced alongside the Cobalt, but go by a different name. The existing Cobalt will continue to be produced until 2010. The new car will use a port injected 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with twin-turbos and generate ~140 hp.

Sounds like one of their Opel "Family 0" engines, specificially the 1.4 liter (1364 cc): 73.4 mm (2.89 in) bore, 80.6 mm (3.17 in) stroke
