Strangely, tourism is not a great water consumer, even though we get 2M+ tourists. Some big hotel complexes have their own desalination, but the average tourist, at least of the type being advertised for, do not use baths/showers very much: they bathe in the sea and take a 30 sec cold shower just to rinse off the salt water. Officially, tourism consumes about 5% of fresh water supplies.
That having been said, tourism here is an environmental blight which has ruined most of the coastline. There is an effort being made to reduce the sea, sand, sun, sex, self merchants in favour of those of more intellectual bent, paleontology, archeology, in the steps Sts Paul and Barnabas, early church history, museums, ornithology, botany etc. but Cyprus is becoming too expensive for many tourists.Brian (the devil incarnate)
