  • Ran into this fishing today..... (attn: Mehen)

    Pics below....

Today the family was fishing in a large pond off the Huron river and ran into a nasty endemic to North America: a Common Snapping Turtle. This one was about 10 lbs, which is at the small end of the scale for adults as they can reach 75 lbs. They can live a very long life - often up to 70 years. The old ones can have a head the size of a medium sized dog and do a lot more damage.

We "obtained" this guy when he took a fishing line, then in anger decided to bite a branch floating in the pond. We dragged him in, removed the hook (with a great deal of caution), took the pics and sent him on his way with the stick still firmly in his grip. He was obviously still in a nasty mood as he immediately released the first stick then bit another one that was even larger in diameter. Apparently its "crime" was floating too close to the mouth of a snapping turtle

Luckily for him we weren't in the mood for turtle soup as snappers make a good one; lots of meat.

Aggressive behavior is their nature and they'll bite almost anything that moves, animate or inanimate, and are very reluctant to let go. Quite a few have latched onto human extremities and the only way to remove them was to decapitate the turtle then cut the jaw muscles. Seen it done many times in our ER over the years.

Sometimes letting go isn't the issue as they are quite capable of removing fingers, toes and even the forearms of children or small adults. This makes caution and the use of tough wading boots in their waters a necessity, which some people just flat ignore. They live in shallow rivers, ponds, estuaries etc. They also show a preference for muddy waters and vegetation near shore.

Now for the bad news: there is a much larger version of these critters in North America - the Alligator Snapping Turtle. The largest Alligator Snapper ever reported weighed in at 403 lbs and was caught in Kansas in 1937. They are a bit less aggressive, but that doesn't mean much since 403 lbs of even mild snapper-style aggression is more than most people want to deal with

That said 175-200 lbs is more like it for Alligator Snappers.

    Now for the pics....

And now for the pond where he lives. This is part of the Huron-Clinton Metropark system, which comprises 24,000 acres (97 km²) in a semicircle around the Detroit area and all within a short drive of us. Parkland, 45 miles (72 km) of hike/bike trails, picnic grounds, golf, disc golf, fishing, water parks, swimming pools, beaches etc. etc. and usable by anyone who can afford the $20/year membership and a reasonable use fee here and there (pools, golf, water parks). Most fees run <$10 USD

Snappers are mean suckers for sure. My Dad is a turtle fanatic and once caught a 25 lbs. snapping turtle in the Ozarks. That was one big mean turtle.

It's funny you post this though. I was ATV'ing at an off-roading park with people from work today and as I was flying around the corner I saw a shell in the middle of the trail. Luckily there was enough room for me to dodge without flying off into the shrubbery, so I stopped and moved him into the safety of the woods. No idea what kind of turtle it was, though the shell was very dark and had red lines in it. The park is 30 miles north of Columiba, SC ... in case anyone wants to look it up.

      Perhaps a painted turtle? They're very common and frequently have colored lines in their shells. The below pic is one of many variations;

That looks like the turtle I saved. Small critter and his bottom shell was bendable so he was completely entrenched in his shell with no breaches in the armor, so to speak.

Hmmmm....a hinged plastron (belly plate) is indicative of a Box or Blanding's turtle. If the upper jaw was hooked like a hawk it's a Box (found throughout the eastern US & Mexico); if notched it might be a Blanding's out of it's normal range (Great Lakes, New England to as far south as southern Ohio).

            Very cool!

My buddy hooked into a snapper a few years ago - as soon as he could tell what it was he just cut the line

I have a Red-Eared Slider, I'll get a pic up of him in a bit.

Goin' fishing on Monday, maybe I'll get some pics of some nice fat Channel Cat.

              "the Alligator Snapping Turtle"
Seen one of these mean SOB's IRL at a local zoo, I overheard a guide telling the members of a guided tour that they kept even the relativly small ones in the same pool as the aligators and crocs and that it was perfectly safe for the turtles but not for the crocs

This is an 80+ lb Alligator Snapper taken in Arkansas, which is still small for the breed. Check the size of that beak vs. the size of the guys wrist and you can see easily a big snapper can take a hand, or more.

Now imagine one 3-5 times heavier.

I'm also all for leaving my body to a pet food canner. That way, I'll be more useful dead than alive!

Ohh. But then YOUR body need to be cleared of pollutants, heavy metals, pesticides, etc.

I guess one could melt, heat and centrifuge most of it.

I think I may eat my pet one day.

The bugger could live to 40+ years... he/she (don't know, don't care) is only 13...
I'll still get a pic up eventually... I wish I had as much free time at home as I do at work.

2 Master Angler kitties tonight (34" is a master). 35.5 and 36.5. I got a pic of the 35.5 on my phone - now I just need a way to get it off of there I might not bother, I'm sure I'll have more in the next few weeks - and I'll bring my actual camera
