Wings land a big one in free agent Hossa
DETROIT -- Free-agent forward Marian Hossa of the Pittsburgh Penguins has signed a one-year contract with the Red Wings, the team announced Wednesday. The deal is reportedly worth $7.4 million.
Hossa was one of the most attractive free agents on the market and was mulling total offers worth over $100 million from Edmonton and Boston.
The 6-foot-1 winger had 29 goals and 37 assists last season for Pittsburgh and Atlanta. He went to the Penguins in a trade deadline deal after the Thrashers realized they would not be able to re-sign him.
Hossa was seeking an opportunity to win a Stanley Cup, and decided to join the Wings for less than the $7.6 million salary of defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom.
Hossa, 29, set his career high in goals (45) in 2002-03 with Ottawa.
