"Chris has a very astute eye," says Nick Davis, the film's visual effects supervisor. "It was important for the visual effects to look as though they were shot on set. He didn't want the film to take on a gimmicky visual-effects look." In keeping with that philosophy, Nolan shot footage for the major visual-effects sequences with IMAX cameras, making The Dark Knight the first feature film shown in IMAX that wasn't originally shot in 35mm.

Found this on /. today about the technical requirements to make the visual effects. They used about 100 TB of storage for the film since it was shot primarily with IMAX cameras. Then the had to downsample the resolution from 18k (the IMAX resolution) to 8K (the maximum resolution the current film scanners support) so they could actually work with the footage. In comparison the author worked on Pitch Black, which was released in 2000, and that took up only 2 TB of data. A single frame of TDK took up 200 MB of storage, and that's at a fraction of what it could have been.

Amazing article for the geeks among us.

      Totally agree.

Saw Ledger in a film called "The Order" where he plays a disillusioned priest on the tail of a "Sin Eater" played by Benno Fürmann. Not for ADD types and not critically well received (related? hmmm...), but I enjoyed it and the darkness of Ledgers performance.

Another record: fastest to clear $300 million - 10 days, beating Dead Man's Chest by 6 full days.

Total US to date: $314.25 million
        Total world: $355.5 million

        First weekend US: $158.4 million
Second weekend US: $75 million (3-4 x what most "good" openers do on their first weekend)

This US total puts it at more than 50% of the way to besting Titanic's $600.788 million all time record in just 10 days.

Our friend at the multiplex says they ended up showing it in 5 theaters this weekend.

Looks like this horse has legs.
