  • Okay, this freaked me out just a little...

A couple of days ago I got a call from a young lady who needed an external usb soundcard for her laptop, which she needed as an accessory in hosting an online radio show. I ordered one through eBay for her and it arrived today, and she came to my house to pick it up.

At this point I should state that this girl is relatively new in town, and we had never met before in our lives.

She came into the house and after initial introductions the first thing she asked was "does this house have a basement?"

We confirmed that it does, as does virtually every other house in town. Christine asked her if she's allergic to cats. She said she was, but it wasn't that. She said something felt "heavy."

We completed our business and I followed her outside and got the web address of her radio show. She then admitted that she'd found it a little difficult to breathe in the house, that it felt oppressive. I asked if she meant something like a haunting. She said no, that there was an overwhelming feeling of sadness hanging over the place. She wondered if anything "strange" had happened here. At that point I indulged her, admitting (without any specifics) that there had been a couple of deaths under this roof (my mother-in-law and my son - but I didn't tell her that). She said she belong to a group of "investigators" and if I needed anything I should give her a call.

I'm tempted to do it and just let her follow her nose to see where it leads her. As long as I don't get a bill!

Interesting indeed, just be careful, but you already know that.

Question, why did she order something through you? Do you have a store or something?
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

I run a computer repair business from home and I'm listed in the yellow pages. I'm the only one of several she called who was willing to take the time to find what she needed. And she needed it fast.

I consider myself a pretty hardcore rationalist, and I don't buy into "ghost whisperers" or the like. However, I'm willing to entertain the idea that there's more to existence than what our science can (yet) explain.

What struck me was that she brought it up first, with absolutely no prompting from me or Christine. I don't see how she could have read our body language or other physical cues, since the subject was as far from our minds as it could possibly have been at the time.

She may be pulling a con and had researched your past prior to her visit.

Perhaps you should research her before making that call.

              A healthy attitude, IMHO.

If you're curious, be careful and don't give her the kind of access or info a criminal - of any sort - would need. If she's legit, she will understand that.

BTW, you could probably just go into any old house and say something to the effect that something terrible must have happened under that roof, and in the vast majority of cases, you'd be right. Especially if you weren't very specific. Still, the (easy!) possibility of this being a scam shouldn't completely rule out that there's indeed something to it. Just don't leave her alone in your house.

My wife saw the thread and wondered what she might have seen in the house.
Pictures on the walls etc..? People usually have a way of presenting pictures of those close to them. She claims you can usually guess if the person in a certain picture is dead or alive.

As a matter of fact that might be it. We do have a photo of Tony with that Footprints poem in the living room, but it's located in a fairly out of the way corner. Right now it's stuck behind a lamp. There are a couple of other photos too, but again nothing that would have indicated anything to do with the basement.

Here is the website she runs her program on. Fairly typical of the genre:

I just know when my sister-in-law Myrna hears about this she's going to totally freak out.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the technique. Doesn't mean I'm immune to it, though.

I love this episode of South Park!
