Well, if you have some new information regarding status of the Earth, I'm sure International Earth-Destruction Advisory Board (same link as in my sig), scientific institution that provides status data, will be most interested in hearing them.

And I'm not just talking about this forum.
Well, I usually go through most MURC threads that can be even vaguely interesting (and not there's a lot of threads on MURC, overall )
And as for providing opinion - I don't see why I shouldn't left written trace about my position regarding them/how their actions influenced my listening habits/how I will try NOT to listen to them. (ok, I was weak and had to check Unforgiven III (though...I didn't like it...)

Well I used to love Metallica. Have been to see them a few times live, and it was a great show.
I got very turned off by the fact that they hate their fans; that, and apparently Lars is a phenomenal douchebag.
Plus, let's be honest - it's hard to stay relevant for 25 years.
It's funny, because lots of Metallica "fans" are VERY stuck on their old sound. Y'know the "we can't play so we just repeat the same riffs for 20 minutes and James can't sing so he drags all the vocals out forever" thing. They worked it, and it was cool, but then they took a few years off... and learned to play/sing.
And all of a sudden their fans were like "OMFG they TOTALLY SOLD OUT!" and decried the black album as the worst thing EVAR. But let's face it - playing your instruments well doesn't mean you sold out. Learning to sing doesn't mean you sold out. It really really doesn't.
Load, Reload, etc... eh. More of the same. No innovation. But a few decent songs to be had.
St. Anger? The first Metallica album we DIDN'T buy. I gave it one listen and shuddered. They weren't playing in TIME with each other, much less in TUNE. It wasn't musical, it was just ... craptastic. But it was a "return to their garage days". I dunno, I think even in their Garage days they could, y'know... play.
And now Death Magnetic. It's great! It's fantastic! If... y'know, if you were really really sad that "...And Justice For All" wasn't twice as long. Because this album is a HUGE follow up to that album. Problem is THAT album came out TWENTY YEARS AGO.
(I'm not joking. It came out in 1988!)
And then it really boils down to ... I'm over that point in my life. The band was evolving with its fans. Growing up with its fans. They've stopped doing that. And I've stopped wanting to listen to the same riff for 8 minutes. Even if that riff is REALLY cool, and REALLY well done - which it is! - I'm just not interested. I'm no longer mopey and introspective. I'm no longer 15, or 16, or 18, or 19.
And, let's face it - neither are the members of Metallica. The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and teenage girls are FBI agents!

Have you ever met Lars? I haven't so I can't say from my own experience, but I can tell you that every singl;e person who thinks Lars is a dick, meets him in person and totally changers their view about him. People think he's a dick because he speaks his mind. I'd think someobody who likes to freely speak his mind yourself, would relate

You've expressed your opinion in the past how you don't like metal because it just repeats itself. Understood, I can see your point. I will go into this more further down.

After a few more years I suddenly grew up and realized that Metallica were playing whatever the **** they wanted. Everybody said they sold out. Well, I realized they did the opposite. The definition of selling out means that one is makeing a lot of money and selling a lot of albums. This didn't happen for the Loads. I also realized I was punishing them for not making Master of Puppets 2.
What a retarded way to look at it. So I finally started lsitening to the music. I'm glad I did, because their are some real gems on the loads. Not many but some. I probably like 7-8 songs between the two.

Personally, I like this album better than the loads. why? because it's ****ing brutal. Have you ever listened to the DVD that comes with the CD? It has the band playing the entire album in the studio. It sounds way better than the CD. I love St. Anger and the way it sounds. I even like Lars' snare sometimes

And Death Magnetic is a smorgisborg of riffs! Holy ****! It takes 10 listens just to soak it all in. Since it seems you only listened to it maybe once at the most, then you really haven't experienced this album. Like I said in an earlier post. I give it a 7.5/10. That's more than I ever expected out of Metallica at this momen in their lives. People generally agree that DM is on par with the first 4 albums. I rate under MOP, RTL and AJFA, but above everything else.

Plus, this album isn't all mopey, it has a positive undertone and feels positive when you listen to it.
You know, I try not to give out my opinion about Metallica too much other than I love this band, but Gurm, you sound like all of the other people who have dismissed Metallica for various different reasons over the years. What happened to, "I will listen to the music and deicde for myself if it is good or not"?
Is my view jaded? Maybe. But I try really hard to not be onesided on this debate. I just feel Metallica gets an undeserved bad rap in some circumstances. They are human like everyone else and make mistakes, but because they are in the limelight, they get chastised for making mistakes because our society thinks it's cool to make fun of people ****ing up!
So there! I'm doneLadies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

I highly recommend seeing them. Don't take my word for it, ask other people too.
No, they don't hate their fans, quite the opposite actually. Since I'm not really sure what you are referring to, I'll refrain from making a comment until you do. Are you talking about Napster? The Load CD's? St Anger? What?

Yep, you're right, it's really hard to stay relevant in a rock band for so long. You are lying to yourself if you don't think they are still relevant.
Seriously. Nobody is still relevant. I get a kick out of Aerosmith but they aren't relevant. Angry badass long hair beard dudes aren't relevant. I'd pay to go see Iron Maiden but they're not relevant. Rush isn't even goddamned relevant - but honestly they never were.
Ahahahaha! Dude, you obviously don't follow the metal scene or you would know that it is the people who hate Metallica that are still stuck on the old sound. Fans like me realize that they will never make another Master of Puppets and I am OK with that.
Ride the Lightning? Great album, right? Eh... no. I would not willingly listen to Ride the Lightning right now. Why? BOOOOOOOORING. Chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-oh-has-it-been-8-minutes-we-didn't-realize-we-were-too-busy-chugging. WAIT AN AWESOME SOLO MAYBE IT'LL STAY COOL... no. Crap, where were we? Oh yes. Chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug-chug.
You've expressed your opinion in the past how you don't like metal because it just repeats itself. Understood, I can see your point. I will go into this more further down.
I was one of those fans that that was pissed the first time I heard TBA. I basically disowned them like a lot of other people did. And then Load came out and I couldn't even believe my ears. My precious Metallica sounded like a ****ing pop band, wtf!
After a few more years I suddenly grew up and realized that Metallica were playing whatever the **** they wanted. Everybody said they sold out. Well, I realized they did the opposite. Do you realize that they did all of this on purpose? They took one take of each song and stuck it on the CD. No Protools, no equalizers, nothing. They just finished going through their worst time as a band and this album is what came out of it. I always wondered if more people would have liked it more if the production was better.

Remember when I said I'd get back to my point above? Well this is it. For someone that bitches about hearing the same riff over and over, I',m kind of amazed that you talk so much shit about AJFA. That album is a technical masterpiece of heavy metal riffs, drum beats, lyrics, and singing. This isn't my opinion, this is the general consensous of many. But you know what's funny, I really hate talking about the technical aspects of music because at the end of the day, you can be the best ****ing drummer or guitarist or whatever and the music can still suck. AJFA sounds amazing! At least to my ears and actually to a lot of others as well.
And Death Magnetic is a smorgisborg of riffs! Holy ****! It takes 10 listens just to soak it all in. Metallica in the Wall St Journal:
The article is about the sound quality of the album and the battle between sales and quality. This is my favorite part.
As for the deafening "Death Magnetic," it struck one fan as fitting for these tumultuous times, thanks to songs like "Broken, Beat and Scarred" and "All Nightmare Long," says Metallica's co-manager, Mr. Burnstein. He says an investment banker emailed to say that "the album and its song titles have just become the soundtrack of Wall Street for fall 2008."“Inside every sane person there’s a madman struggling to get outâ€
