I've worked in a couple of petrol stations, many years ago now, as summer jobs.
Access to anything to do with the pumps is tightly regulated. You would have to do a good job of looking like the regular service companies, which I guess the serious crime people would think worth the effort.

        Update:

Well it looks like I'm all square. I just got back £648

The weird thing though is that even though the Dell payment never cleared, last week I got an invoice from Dell, and proof that they actually delivered a laptop to an address in London (150 miles away). The invoice said there was nothing to pay. Local police weren't interested. London police EVENTUALLY, and I do mean EVENTUALLY, made a note of my call and agreed to pass details on (probably to the round filing cabinet on the floor marked 'recycling') but maintain that I am not a victim as the money wasn't taken. "No victim no crime" was the mantra.
        FT.

It happened in Belgium a few years ago...

One night, a bank-card machine at a fuel station was stolen...
Couple of months later, money was extracted withdrawn in Spain from people that were in Belgium and could even show their card.
Thieves of that one machine made a unit which they implanted in a bank-card machine at a fuel station. They were cought when they tried to remove their device to install it elsewhere...

Wasn't there recently something similar, following a break-in in a factory that makes bank-card devices?
