  • Car Insurance Fraud

Something happened to me this past January that bothers the shit out of me.

Basically, I backed into another car in a parking lot. I was going probably 1 or 2 mph. A few weeks later, I find out that the lady I hit is claiming injury. They tell me that with these kinds of people who they know are blatantly trying to steal money from the system, they just end up paying them off so they don't have to go to court.

A few months ago, I started thinking about this whole thing and it dawned on me that in California, if you cause an accident, you get one point on your record, but if there is an injury, it is two points. Two points on your insurance erases any good driver discounts you were getting.

So basically, I am paying more money to my insurance company because some lady, who is blatantly defrauding the system, decided that they didn't want to shell out more money to take her to court. WTF? This really bothers me. I know for a fact that she wasn't injured.

I follow the law and do my part and I end up getting screwed in the end. Is this something that is worth me pursuing? I mean, I wouldn't get my good driver discount anyway, since I have a speeding ticket as well, but that is not the point. The point is that if anybody gets into an accident and the insurance company pays off the other person who is claiming injury, then that is what it is going to say on your record even if you didn't injure the other person.

    Thoughts? Experiences?
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

I wish the insurance companies would fight this kind of stuff, maybe getting frivolous "sewers" to pay court and legal costs would discourage them. Though they probably have no money anyway.

I had a car pull out in front of me once, the guy assumed he could accelerate out of the way... just over the hill was broken down car so he slams on the brakes...bamm.

I wanted to take it to court, but all the independent advice said it was pointless, it would cost more money and chances he would win becasue "I" hit him from the rear.
