I have an account, useful to stay in touch with friends back in Belgium. I mainly use it for quick chats or small news updates (not that frequent: once every two weeks or so). The diving club and flying club I'm a member in uses it to send out announcements of events.

Only people on it are friends I know in real life, privacy is maxed out.

I have an account with the same photo as here.
Mainly for keeping in touch with old friends ( i.e; I'm alive.), but i check it maybe once a year, if that.

Took away most of the personal info, and just left the basics.

I use it to keep track of family/old friends, and more importantly what my kids are up to. You'd be surprised what they don't mind posting to the world, but won't make any mention to you about.

Oh, this reminds me... It is said that the Belgian tax offices checks facebook, and if they notice you spend an more than what they deem possible from your income (e.g. posting about holidays, purchases, ...), they may give your dossier a closer look. I don't know if there is any truth to that though...

I'm on it (Ragu Devan) can't miss it as i use the same profile picture. I'm on it just to make myself sleep after work. I do the graveyard shift and has problems getting to sleep, clicking on stuff in the cafeworld game in facebook can make me drop off like a log faster than Norah Jones's songs

Nope. Linked-in. All other social networking (aside from Murc) are done live. In bars sometimes.

I'm not on any social network (if you don't consider bulletin boards as social networks that is), nor do I intend to be on any.

But talking about facebook, today I got a weird email from them.

It was from facebook, signed by someone I know asking me to sign up for facebook and with a list of names of people 'I might know'. Indeed, all the people (9 total) in the list were known to me, with no direct relation between these people afaik.

                          Now I have some questions:
                          - How did facebook got my email address? (I'm trying to find out from the person who signed the invitation to me)
                          - How does facebook know that I knew those 9 people they listed?

I was hoping they weren't yet capable of automatically recognizing me in any photograph by object recognition based on a couple of tagged pictures. Hopefully there's a different explanation...

update: the person let facebook datamine all his hotmail emails, making the link with my name/email address. Doesn't explain the list of other people though. Maybe there's some algorithm that will make a guess depending on how many mutual relationships there are between the names.

yup. If enough people let facebook datamine their email and when the facial recognition is working well enough, it won't make a difference if you're on facebook or not.

Maybe checking for mails including cc's? Cross-referencing with others'.

How would FB have your face and name together??
