  • Movie studios coming to Michigan

Last year the State of Michigan passed incentives for movie producers to encourage production in our state. One of the first beneficiaries was the Clint Eastwood production of "Gran Torino".

Now more benefits are coming from that move, and they're biggies.

First there was news that the State was negotiating with 3 movie/TV studios for studio's & back lots to be built in Detroit and two other cities in Michigan. These would be full, permanent production studios.

    Estimated cost: $80 million

Today a 4th shoe dropped: the Mayor of Allen Park (10 miles SW of Detroit and south of Dearborn) announced that a major studio will be building a full production studio & back lot, restaurants and a theater complex on 100+ acres in their city. He could not say what studio other than "it's out of state", but when pressed if he could deny it's a well known one from Hollywood he "could not deny that".

The deal should be finalized and details announced in a few weeks and is separate from the deals the State is negotiating.

    Estimated construction cost: $100 million

    Permanent jobs (non-construction): 3,500

and they're committed to re-training local auto workers laid off because of the downturn to fill most of these jobs.

Indicating that it will be highly active was that some of the studio's demands were that several Lowe's and Home Depot's be near by and some local - obviously so they have lumber etc. for sets.

Also critical is that Allen Park is 5 minutes from Metro Airport and has 3 major freeways running throught it, one leading to major hotels in Dearborn.
