  • Philips 21:9 LCD TV

Here we go again....another generation of video upgrades imminent

    Link....

    Summary

As all aspect ratio snobs know, the 21:9 cinema screen aspect ratio was developed to mimic our own peripheral vision and therefore provide a more immersive viewing experience. Recognizing this Philips has unveiled the world’s first cinema-proportioned LCD TV dubbed the Cinema 21:9, which features a 21:9 aspect ration 56-inch screen and Philips’ Ambilight technology to deliver what it says is the most completely immersive home viewing experience possible.

that would be great for movies, but horrible for TV, unless what is broadcast is really changed, or we have huge black bars on the side of the picture.. though I suppose you could fit 2 or maybe even 3 regular broadcasts side by side in one such tv

Now imagine a 21:9 HD laser projector based on the Microvision PicoP technology; no need to focus, sharp at any distance, super bright images up to 80"/100" and small enough to fit in your shirt pocket.

PicoP tech is already coming to media devices and cell phones and IIRC there will be TV's and HUD's based on it. They also just got a US military contract for developing a high resolution compact display for miltech.

YouTube video....(black bars are TV scan artifact)

The properly equipped home theater will have automatic curtains which will adjust to the width of the image displayed.

Weren't we supposed to be at 3D (non glasses or other funny business) Displays by now?

I'll wait for those, just spent money on a HD Monitor to match up the Nehalem rig, not gonna go spend more now no matter how good it's supposed to look. Not unless it's the aforementioned 3D displays.

These new aspect displays probably cost 3x if not more the current displays anyway.

my 5 year old sony rear projection tv actually does that already.. called Picture And Picture. You can scale ether left or right side up to be full size 4:3, with a small secondary picture, or have two ~25" 4:3 screens going at the same time. Pretty neat

a properly equipped home theater also has a much bigger screen, and from what I see at the AVS forums, they all use front projectors

Yes, most TVs can do it too (or text by picture). But on such a wide screen, there would not be much need for scaling.

LCD also stands for lowest common denominator and the LCD for an AR of 21:9 is 7:3. Is somebody trying to be too clever by half?

                        Hey, good call!
Guess it is to stress the difference with 16:9... but yes, we never referred to 4:3 as 12:9...

They too were shown at CES, but live acquistion, broadcast and display of color no-glasses 3D video was demonstrated. Mitsubishi's was a bit klunky requiring several Firewire cams and servers, but LG, Philips and others are hot on the trail. The NBA (National Basketball Assn) is also hot on 3D; they're already experimenting with stereo filming.
