  • Asus Eee Keyboard: C-64 on steroids?

Sure sounds like it....a PC in a keyboard with SSD storage and a 5" touchpad screen on the right side and wireless HDMI.

Asus Eee Keyboard to arive in mid-2009

Remember Asus’ intriguing little computer stuffed inside a keyboard? Well, luckily for gadget lovers and home theater PC fans alike, it appears that the Eee Keyboard was more than just a concept device and in fact it is expected to launch in the second quarter of the year – tentatively around May or June.

Besides packing a 5-inch built-in display the forthcoming device will have a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and either a 16GB or 32GB solid state drive. The company's CEO, Jerry Shen, said they will have a version with wireless HDMI to send HD images to TVs around the house and one sans the feature. The first will reportedly run about $600 while the less capable version should cost somewhere around $400.

I wonder if it could handle 1080p. I'm guessing no, but still thats still pretty cool. And I would imagine you would probably leave it plugged in while watching movies.

Basically a HTPC and remote all in one. I want one.

That's presuming they haven't built in a membrane, or the eventual availability of one in the aftermarket.

Depends on weather it's nvidia ION based, or Intel chipset based. If Intel, no. If nvidia, yes. Assuming wireless HDMI works right.

Regardless, I really like the concept. If they can perfect it in the next couple years; I'm sold.

Hell, I'd pay closer to $1000 if it could do 1080p flawlessly, and wireless HDMI worked flawlessly as well. And has fast enough network capabilities to stream 1080p.

It replaces an uber expensive universal remote and a HTPC, and takes up less space in the process.

A nice little HTPC from MSI:
MSI hasn't made a big fuss about it, but the Wind Box DE200 is new for CeBIT 2009. The unit seems to be the bigger brother of its Wind Box DC100, and while we're stoked about the optional Blu-ray player, we're seriously doubting that the listed Celeron M 550 (2GHz) is the only CPU available. The unit also comes loaded with NVIDIA's GeForce 9400M GPU, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 802.11n WiFi, HDMI and DVI outputs, Windows Vista Home edition, a multicard reader, audio in / out, Ethernet, a few USB 2.0 ports and an overly glossy enclosure. We've no pricing or release information to share just yet, but you can peek a few more angles down in the gallery below.%Gallery-46752%

A little more down-to-earth, but I recently bought myself (yes, paid with my own money!) a Samsung NC10. Got a good price on ebay and put various little pots towards it so effectlively it was about half price.

It's great! The screen is 10.2", 1024*600, which is perfectly fine for browsing in full-screen. It has 2GB, 160GB, 1.6GHz Atom, webcam, 3*USB, BT, wifi b/g, multi-touch trackpad, SDHC card reader etc etc. It squeezes into a large pocket and has been very usefull when out and about.

It also would lack the necessary drives and storage space...

But if it were cheap enough, it could really become a control device for a htpc (remote desktop connection, web based control, ...), while allowing one to quickly read a mail or browse a site on the small screen.

Who wants a bunch of noisy drives in their HTPC anyways? Thats what NAS's and servers are for. I know if I ever build a HTPC I would be using a single small SSD.
Only thing missing is the bluray drive.

                            True...
But you would then get the scenario: nas --wifi--> pc --wireless hdmi--> tv
Which most certainly would require the pc to be plugged in (less convenient if it is this keyboard thing).

As an alternative, I'd think along the lines of:
                            nas --wifi/ethernet--> pc --hdmi--> tv
"keyboard pc" --wifi for remote control-->pc
(this would allow the keyboard pc to remain unplugged for longer periods of time, while still allowing full control)

                              Ultimately I'd like to see:
NAS/HTPC in other location > TV

With the TV+NAS/HTPC controlled by single remote device.
