So...our grandsion Kaden (now 6) is asked by his teacher if he wants to bring in some cupcakes so they can have a birthday party for him at school. When he comes home his mom (our middle sons wife, Elizabeth) asks what kind of cupcakes he wants.

True to the nature of our line he of course says "ZOMBIE HEADS!!", which is exactly what Elizabeth and my darling wife and his grandmother Margie set upon providing -

And regarding zombies, Doc - I wouldn't be terribly surprised at another poor US kid getting a suspension, generally; though I guess that's impossible in this case, if only thanks to your wife

There wasn't a problem, and in fact a couple of parents came over to get directions on making them for their Halloween parties. Not too many bakers out there as they are very simple.

let me guess, cookie dough and almond for the fingernails, food coloring for the blood, gotta think about the nail coloring being silvery tho

Silvery isn't a problem: edible silver leaf, though gold is also available. Can get it at most high end cooking ware shops.

nearly spot on. special cookie dough though, would have to look it up. we didn´t want any nail coloring - just used the "blood" on a few for fun. actually, we did several hundred of them in in a bakery for ballroom decoration.
don´t forget to cut them lightly, to simulate the folds on the knuckles.
