There will be a portable 120V unit (right) that can be plugged into any standard receptacle. It will be able to recharge the car fully in 6 hours at 12 amps or 8 hours at 8 amps.
The other device option (left) is a 240V wall-mounted unit that has to be installed per code. This unit running at 16 amps can recharge the Volt in 3 hours.
GM has stated that the Volt's battery is also capable of being charged by 240V 48 amps in 45 minutes, but this won't be offered by the factory.
240V/48 amp sounds like a good aftermarket opportunity IMO. If such infrastructure were put in at businesses etc. people could recharge in as much time as it takes to have dinner, and GM has been working with municipalities, power companies and business groups to make it happen.
The connector meets the new SAE J1772 standard which provides durability, communications with smart grids and safety functions along with universal usability among EVs.
The connectors have a built-in flashlight for night hookups and there is a flashing light on the dash to tell you if it's still connected (no, it won't run if the cord is attached). The cord/connector can handle full immersion in water with no ill effects.
