Bottom line is that it's perfectely acceptable manners here to perforate a robber while he's in the act. In many states it's even acceptable to shoot them while they're escaping, especially on your own property or when they're still close enough to turn and pose a second threat with their own weapon. The latter is a very real threat - just ask any experienced street cop.
The police and prosecutors are also required to assume the citizen was acting in their own defense until its proven otherwise, not the other way around.
