Toyota recalls 2.3M vehicles over sticking pedals

Washington -- Toyota today is announcing a new recall of 2.3 million vehicles over sticking accelerator pedals -- the latest safety issue to dog the Japanese automaker.
Today's recall of many popular vehicles is to "correct sticking accelerator pedals" and is separate from November's recall of 4.26 million vehicles linked to sudden acceleration incidents. That recall was to reduce the risk of pedal entrapment by incorrect or out of place accessory floor mats.
Combined, approximately 1.7 million Toyota models are subject to both recall actions.
"In recent months, Toyota has investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms in certain vehicles without the presence of floor mats," said Toyota spokesman Irv Miller.
"Our investigation indicates that there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position."
The announcement came as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was debating launching a formal investigation into the new pedal issue. NHTSA sent investigators to two recent incidents in Texas and New Jersey.
"Toyota has been discussing this issue with the agency over the last several days. We believe it is a serious safety issue and we are pleased that Toyota is taking immediate action to address it," NHTSA said in a statement.
