  • Belgium in the news

Well, the government resigns for the 4th in 3 years... (bear in mind that forming the current coalition took well over a year)... all over some stupid dispute concerning language in a few cities... It is a silly problem that is mainly symbolic, but it keeps paralysing politics in the last 10 years or so (though the problem exists since 1963). Main reason it is a bigger problem is that the federal elections are now unconstitutional, and with an agreement over this dispute, no legal elections are possible.
For this reason, the first elections after the ruling were moved forward 2 weeks, to take place before the deadline set by the supreme court. We have had elections since, but parliament then agreed on the election results and it sort of circumvented the issue.

And in other news the bishop of Bruges resigns over sexual abuse...
    *sigh*
