  • Alien - the movies

I have the quadrilogy DVD set. All the movies have an 18 cert.

Q: If they were to release those films now, what cert would they be?

Alien and Aliens were rated R (17 and over) for violence & gore, but IMO by today's standards they would get a PG-13.

Same content with Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection but add language and a bit of nudity in Resurrection (the scene where another clone is on a hospital bed) and stronger themes in Alien 3 (acknowledged sexual deviancy and attempted rape), which would likely keep them at R

The swearing alone would still make them 'R' rated (cause we all know younger kids don't use foul language ).

The gore is nothing that isn't seen on regular broadcast TV these days.
Nor is the nudity, with the exception of a female nipple or some pubes.
Hell, stuff that was broadcast in the UK 30-40 years ago is still censored here.

The whole movie rating system in the US is a joke, and has been for decades.

I thought you might say that. I first saw Alien aged ~14, on my own with a tiny B&W tv next to my double-bed, with the light off. There were parts that nearly made me fall out the opposite side of the bed

I'm wondering when it would be suitable for a precocious 12 yo who is desperate to see it.

Our 7 year old grandson has already seen the whole series. He's a zombie film freak who has also seen the whole Resident Evil series and worse. He also hasn't been raised in an environment where the human body is 'evil' or where sexuality is either. Sex ed in this family starts when they're old enough to ask the question, and with the smart kids/grandkids around here that's pretty early.

Well, if you want said 12 year old to get "afraid of the dark"
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

Our kids/grandkids are fearless little mongrels. All of 'em. Wonder where that came from?
