    Orleans moose shot dead

A young moose was shot dead in Orleans more than eight hours after it and another moose were first spotted near an elementary school.

City cops got the call about the two animals at about 5 a.m. The animals were contained on the property of Ecole Des Pionniers just off Charlemagne Ave. as several unsuccessful attempts were made to tranquilize them.

The animals eventually split up. One of them headed back into the woods, but the other went into a residential area and police opted to shoot it for public safety.

It ended up in Judy Miscampbell’s back yard after dodging an OC Transpo bus and jumping a six-foot fence.

Cops take heat for killing moose

Police have been caught in the sights of a public hungry for answers after the killing of a moose in Orleans.

“There’s no winning on this, we know that,” Ottawa Police Chief Vern White said Wednesday.

But cops had no other choice than to destroy one of two moose, White explained. If the animal trampled a child, police would be called out for not doing enough.

Residents have been sending correspondence to police since the moose incident Tuesday.

“A lot of the questions are the same questions we sit back and ask,” White said.
    Advocates pan handling of moose

Those angered over the shooting of a moose Tuesday in Ottawa are asking why the police were involved at all.

“It’s sad and unnecessary,” said Donna Dubreuil, president of the Ottawa-Carleton Wildlife Coalition.

She said the pair of moose who made their way into a suburban Orleans neighbourhood, were yearlings — meaning they were born in the spring of 2009.

“The mother kicks them out because she’s ready to calf again,” said Dubreuil. “They were probably confused.”

She said tranquilization can be unpredictable and is risky, particularly with animals with a large body mass.

“It should be a last resort,” she said.
I just thought it was funny that here in the nation's capital, we had two moose running around

apparently the killing of one of the moose has ignited a shit storm. wow.

Shouldn't be the Police's problem. However if no one else (whatever you guys have in Ontario, we have Conservation Officers) stepped up to deal with it, then killing the thing to be on the safe side gets my vote.

I agree... it should be the last resort, but they did the only thing they could have done...

In Warsaw, police in 2000 had to deal with an escaped tiger from an Egyptian circus. They ended up shooting the tiger after a two hour chase, but one of the bullets also killed the vet.
