  • Earthquake!

    We just had an earthquake!
I was sitting at my desk and the building did this weird rummbly-sway thing for a few seconds. Becky felt it at our house 4 miles NW of here too.

That is NOT something you expect in Oklahoma City.

Turns out it was a 4.3 5.1 about twenty miles from here.
Not much, if any, damage to anything apparently.

I know all the California MURCers are yawning.
But really, an earthquake in OKC!? Kind of neeto actually.

Slight damage, and felt as far away as Dallas Texas 200 mi from here!

    Upgraded to 5.1

USGS is still reporting a 4.3....

Only 5km deep though, pretty high up...
Any Volcanoes that are dormant out there ?

The nearest volcanoes that I know of are around Mount Capulin.
But that's 400 miles from here and extinct for 60k years.

Fun little side trip if you are ever out that way.

        Odd fact.
There is a closet door in my office that hasn't latched correctly since the Murrah Bombing in 1995 which was only a couple of blocks from here. (according to a coworker who officed here then)

It now latches correctly. The quake seems to have straightened the building up.

Kingfisher, OK is just NW of OKC isn't it?

Back around 2005 hot springs & geysers appeared there, raising suspicions there could be a hidden caldera in the area. It's also close to the Nemaha fault zone, the southern end of which is just N of OKC.

Sounds like it might be waking up

Just south of Kingfisher is El Reno, site of OK's largest recorded earthquake at 5.5 in 1952

Actually, there is a little town called Jones just NE of OKC that has had quite a string of small earthquakes over the last year or so.

            OMFG we are doomed!

PS, Not really hot springs or geysers in the normal sense of the word.
They were caused by a natural gas leak.

not that far from New Madrid either...

Capulin is an easy cinder cone to visit with kids. Coyote Creek State Park is not too far to the north west - nice tent camping sites, large lake, and wildlife.

Yeah, I felt it at work. Cubicles shaking and then a loud thump, like someone slamming a really big door. Then nothing. Wasn't sure what it was until the wife messaged me asking if I felt it.

I knew we got small tremors here and there, but this was the first one I have actually felt in the 11+ years I've lived here.
