Guess the NZ and AU unions want to screw up the down under movie industry like they have in the US. Disney has pulled out of this region because of the Australian Actors union demands.. They seem to forget about the non actors jobs...

Or that movies can be filmed elsewhere without the need to deal with their crap.

          Their loss!

            couple of updates ...

            - will be filmed in New Zealand
            - Cate is back as Galadriel
            - Howard Shore is also back for the soundtrack
            - Martin Freeman will play Bilbo (he player Arthur in the Hitchhikers Guide movie)
            - Hellboy will not play Beorn, that role got Mikael Persbrandt
            - all in 3D on some shiny new Red Epic cameras (same will be used for the next Spiderman)
            - will be in cinemas December 2012 and December 2013 ...

[edit] forgot to mention: It will not be a Hobbit Movie and an additional movie covering the time between Hobbit and LotR
but Hobbit will span both movies and they will just add things happening outside of the story into the movies where it
            fits best.

and fresh from the press some more updates:

              - Ian McKellen has finally signed and is back as Gandalf
              - Andy Serkis also has signed and is back as Gollum
              - Elijah Wood has signed as well and is back as Frodo (yes, they wrote him into the story, kinda narrator-wise according to ToRn)

yep, sounds like it has potential

and to add some more fuel to the fire, here's another rumour

In addition, rumor has it that Sir Christopher Lee is also in talks to reprise his role as Saruman. Saruman was the leader of the White Council, a council of the Wise in Middle-earth that decided to try to oust Sauron from his fortress in Mirkwood forest at the time of The Hobbit. And, if you can stand even more good news, Sir Ian Holm is also rumored to be in talks to appear in the movies as an older Bilbo.

                      I heard that too. Here's another -

                      Smaug: Leonard Nimoy

                      Thranduil: David Tennant

Nimoy would be great as he already has experiences with hobbits

seriously, haven't heard that before and can't comment on that as i have no clue how Nimoy sounds for real as we only have his synchronized voice over here ...

according to his official website, Christopher Lee seems to be back as well ..

                          http://christopherleeweb.com/

Slowly but surely, Peter Jackson has managed to secure the return of the majority of the major stars from The Lord of the Rings franchise for his soon to be shooting prequel, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Sir. Christopher Lee had been in talks to reprise his role as the wizard Saruman and it now looks certain, providing that he is in good health, that he will be appearing in the movie.

Leonard Nimoy read quotes and techs for Civilization 4 he sounds great. Otherwise I understand that - for me Knight Rider will forever sound like German voiceover.
