  • Remembering the Ford Rotunda

Today in 1962 the glorious Ford Rotunda burned to the ground due to a fire started by roofers. For generations of not only Detroiters but Americans in general its Christmas displays became a must-see tourist destination. At one point it was the #5 tourist destination in the US.

I spent many of my childhood fall days counting the minutes until it opened for the holidays. There were always two giant spiral stairways that lead up to, and down from, Santa's throne several meters above the floor, and we waited our turns enjoying the view of the huge Christmas trees and displays. The holidays haven't been quite the same since, and I'm sad because my children didn't get their turn to enjoy its wonders.

    History....
